Abstract
Cellulose-ester and -ether materials are delustred by subjecting them to the action of hot aqueous media or moist steam in the presence of an amide of a carboxylic or sulphonic acid. Examples of such amides are acetanilide, benzamide, phthalimide, benzanilide, diacetyl-p-phenylenediamine, diacetyl benzidine, oleic amide, stearic amide, p-toluene sulphonamide and its N-methyl or N-ethyl derivatives, xylene monomethyl sulphonamide, and p-toluene-sulpho-benzidine. The amide may be dissolved in the hot aqueous medium, or dispersed therein by means of soap, turkey red oil, or the dispersing agents described in Specifications 219,349, 224,925, 242,393, 242,711, 269,960, 273,819, 273,820, 322,737, and 323,788, [all in Class 15 (ii)]. The dispersion may be assisted by means of solvents such as xylene or a halogen hydrocarbon. Alternatively, the materials may be first impregnated with the amide, as by padding, using a relatively concentrated dispersion, and thereafter passed through hot or boiling water. In a modification, the materials are printed with the amides, and then subjected to the action of the hot aqueous media, whereby pattern effects are obtained. If desired, the delustring baths may contain substances adapted to modify the action of the bath, as described, for example, in Specification 260,312, [Class 2 (ii)]. A further application is for the removal of " glaze marks " (e.g. marks produced by improper ironing) from cellulose acetate fabrics, without substantial delustring of the material taking place. The following examples are given: (1) Cellulose acetate fabric is treated in a jig with a hot dispersion of p-toluene sulphonamide. (2) A cellulose acetate garment containing " glaze marks " is treated in a hot bath comprising a dispersion of p-toluene sulphonamide. (3) Cellulose acetate fabric is either treated with a hot dispersion of acetanilide, or is padded with a more concentrated dispersion of acetanilide, allowed to stand, and thereafter passed through a tank of boiling water. Specifications 165,164, 266,777, [both in Class 2 (ii)], and 409,276 also are referred to.
