[Class 138 (ii).] A plunger 2, Fig. 4, is slidably mounted in the neckband space 1, Fig. 2, of the press head 11 and is operated by a lever 6, Fig. 4. When the machine is to be used for pressing shirt fronts the neckband clamp 8 is lowered into the operative position shown in Fig. 4 by means of a handle 27 and lever 7 and the plunger is raised by means of the lever 6. If the operator omits to raise the plunger a safety rod 9 on the lever 7 contacts with the handle 26 of the lever 6 and raises the plunger. When the machine is to function on other parts of the shirt or on other garments the plunger is lowered so that its lower face is flush with the pressing surface of the head, the lever 6 being mounted on a shaft having a crank arm 4 connected by a spring 10 with the plunger. A slight longitudinal movement of the buck relatively to the press head occurs immediately prior to the contact of the head with the buck. This is effected by means of a nut 15, Fig. 1, on a rod 14 moving with the head and contacting at 16 with a lever 17 pivoted at 18. The lever rocks a bell-crank lever 19, 20, the arm 20 of the bell crank compressing a spring 21, Fig. 2, against an abutment 22 depending from the buck and so moving the latter. A restoring spring 25 is provided.
