Abstract

511,477. Welding. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 17, 1939, No. 1650. Convention date, Jan 17, 1938. [Class 83 (iv)] In an electric spot or lap welding-machine of the kind in which the movable electrode is moved by a rigid member which is connected to a flexible member so that the rigid member is first moved alone to apply the electrode to the work whereupon the. connection between the rigid member and the flexible member causes the latter to apply the welding pressure automatically, the pressure is transmitted from the flexible member to the electrode through a bell crank lever and articulated levers, which latter are operated by a rigid rod driven by a crank so as first to apply the electrode to the work and then to rock the bell crank to transmit pressure from the flexible member to the electrode. The fixed electrode 4 is connected by an arm 2 to the casing 1 and the movable electrode-5 to a slide 6 carried by the arm 3. The slide'6 6 is connected to a toggle 8 connected near the snapjoint 13 to a rigid rod 14 reciprocated by a crank 15. The toggle is connected by a crank lever 9 and bar 10 to one end of a spring 11, the other end of which is fixed to the arm 3, the initial tension of the spring being adjusted by a load wheel 12. When the crank 15 is put in position by pressure on a foot switch 22, the electrode 5 is first moved into contact with the work by the rod 14, whereupon when further downward motion thereof is resisted the rod 14 through lever 9 and bar 10 increases the tension of the spring 11 which applies the welding pressure. To the bar 10 is connected a pivoted arm 17 which carries a rod 19 connected at its other end to a similar arm and carrying a stop, which releases the contact 20 so as to allow the welding switch 21 to close when the desired pressure is reached. In order to enable the rod 14 to be adjusted when the overhang of the arms 2, 3 is varied, the crank 15 operates on a sleeve 16 in which the rod 14 is adjustable. The drive is effected through a clutch which is automatically disconnected after half a revolution or after one or more complete revolutions.
