Abstract

659,440. Ironing-presses. WHITAKER, Ltd., R. G., and GRAY, F. T. March 2, 1949, No. 5711. [Class 138 (ii)] In a garment pressing machine of the type in which a movable head 3 mounted on a beam 4 pivoted (at 5) on the frame of the machine is manually controlled and brought into pressing relation with a stationary buck 2, the weight of the head being counterpoised by springs or a weight 11, power means subsidiary to the manual control is provided for assisting movement of the head towards the closed position by manual operation. The manual control includes a fixed handle 10 and a movable handle 28 carried by a lever 29 which is pivoted at 5 and controlled by a spring 30. The power means comprises a hydraulic cylinder 12 and piston 13 whose rod 14 is pivotally connected to the rear end of the beam 4. The lower end of the cylinder 12 is connected by piping 18 to the port 19 of a valve 20 having an inlet 21 and outlet 22. The piston 23 of the valve 20 is connected by a rod 24 to a linkwork 25, 26, 27, the link 27 being connected to the operating handle 28. By pulling down the handle 28 the piston 23 is depressed and steam or compressed air from inlet 21 is supplied through port 19 and piping 18 to the cylinder 12 and thus the piston 13 moves upwardly to assist the movement of the beam. Movement of the beam by the fixed handle 10 has no effect on the valve 20 and the power means is not brought into action. The stroke of the piston 13 is restricted so that, before the head and buck are brought into actual contact, the piston 13 has completed its stroke, the final movements to bring about the pressing of the garments being permitted by a resilient mounting 17 which allows limited spring-controlled displacement of the cylinder 12. The manual control may also include a treadle 7 in the form of a bell-crank pivoted to the frame and connected by a link 8 to a point 9 of the beam 4.
