Abstract

640,077. Guillotine machines. SOAG MACHINE TOOLS, Ltd. April 16, 1948, No. 10678. [Class 31 (i)] A guillotine machine is provided with a work-holding clamp actuated through a slipping clutch, the load at which the clutch commences to slip being determined by the resistance offered to an auxiliary member tending to move with one of the clutch parts, means being provided for varying such resistance at will. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 a rock-shaft 3 controlling a work clamp and which may be operated through a pedal (not shown) has secured to one end a clutch drum 4<SP>1</SP> engageable by shoes 7, 8 pivoted at 9, 10 on an annular member 11 free to oscillate about the shaft 3. The adjacent ends of the shoes are connected together by toggle links, an arm 21 connecting the two sets of links. An arm 26 connected to one of the toggle mechanisms has secured thereto one end of a shaft 27, Fig. 3, pivotally supported in the annular member 11, the other end of the shaft being secured to an arm 28 which engages in a slot (not shown) formed in the boss of a brake drum 32, Fig. 7, mounted on a sleeve extension 12 of the member 11. The brake drum is embraced by a band 44 secured to a bell-crank lever 46, the pressure of the band on the drum being adjustable by means of a spring-loaded rod 49 actuated by a hand wheel 56 to which is coupled an indicator 63. Operation of a starting lever, not shown, causes rod 36, which is pivoted to the member 11, to effect one complete reciprocation. Downward movement of the rod 36 causes the member 11 to turn initially in a clockwise direction, Figs. 4 and 7, which movement is resisted by the braking effort applied by the band 44 to the drum 32 when the latter turns. The drum is then locked, causing the arm 28 to turn the shaft 27 and arm 26 to operate the clutch shoes 7 and 8 which grip the clutch drum 4. The drum 4 and rock-shaft 3 thus turn with the member 11 and the work-holding clamp is operated from shaft 3, descending in advance of the guillotine which is operated through rods 67. Subsequent upward movement of the rod 36 causes the apparatus to return to its initial condition.
