[Class 80(ii)] [Alsoin Groups VIII and XVI] A machine for ornamenting parts of boots and shoes &c. by cutting, perforating, or embossing operations as described in Specification 527,069, [Group VIII], is modified so as to permit a dwell in the operations when applied to operations comprising embossing, or branding by heat. This is effected by providing clutch-operating means in addition to the clutch described in the above Specification, and by operating this clutch the operator can control the time during which the work is held under pressure by the dies. The additional clutch-operating means may be put out of action so that the machine can operate exactly as in the prior Specification. The machine is started by depression of a treadle T which operates a lever 18 with a catch 19 to transfer motion via lever 20 and a link 21, freely mounted lever 22, pin 25 and rod 26 to an electromagnetic clutch A which controls the movement of the diecarriage 15 and moves it into register with the work-support 14. The die-carriage throws in a clutch 12 for driving the main shaft 11 by operating a lever 27, link 28, arm 29, and a tripping lever hook 30 which draws the tapered clutch wedge 31 out of the path of a clutch key 32. A second clutch control lever 38 fitted with a wedge 39 may be operated to throw out the clutch when the shaft 11 has made half a revolution only. The lever 38 is connected adjustably to a rod 35 provided with a pin 36 which may be connected to a notch 34 in the tripping lever when it is desired to cause a dwell in the operation. When not desired the rod 35 can be held in inactive position by a placing the stud 36 in one of the grooves of a fixed stud 42. The wedge 39 holds the clutch in inoperative position until the treadle T is again depressed so that the period of dwell is under the control of the operator The work support is raised by toggle mechanism 13 actuated by the shaft 11.
