Brake operating means comprising a column movable axially for applying or releasing the brakes and rotatable for locking or unlocking it in or from a braking position, is distinguished by the column being guided by means permitting it to oscillate about an axis substantially parallel with the pivot axis by which it is jointedly connected with brake linkage. The brake-operating column comprises two parts, an upper tubular part 5 having a handle 7 attached thereto and a lower solid part 4 pivoted at 8 to a lever 9 of the brake linkage. The upper extremity of the part 4 is formed with a collar 15 which fits within a recess in a sleeve 12 fast with the end of the tube 5. A further sleeve 13 is pinned to the part 4 and the interengaging faces of the sleeves are formed with projections 17 which permit a limited amount of relative rotation between them. The upper end of the part 5 is slidably mounted in a collar 6 attached to the dashboard 1 and formed with a radiused seating 20 which permits the column to rock about a theoretical axis B under the action of the arcuate movement of the lever 9. A tubular projection 21 formed on the collar 6 houses a pawl 23 urged by a spring 22 into engagement with a rack 24 formed on the part 5. The teeth of the rack are shaped to run out into the outside diameter of the tube so that by rotation of the handle 7, the rack can be disengaged from the pawl 23 to permit free axial movement of the operating column.
