Class 79(5) In a motor vehicle braking mechanism, the hand-brake is replaced by an axially displaceable steering column 1 adapted to actuate either one of two brake operating system 10, 11 according to the sense of the displacement. As described, the splined end of the column 1 engages an internally splined sleeve 3 carrying a tangent worm 3a which actuates a steering finger 5. The column is thus free to slide axially to operate the system 10, 11 through a rocking lever 8. The column is held against axial movement by springs 6, 7 accommodated in a tube 1, surrounding the column; and it may be locked against axial movement by a bolt which engages a notch in the column until withdrawn by depression of a pedal which may be the brake pedal, Fig. 3 (not shown). A pawl and ratchet mechanism may be used to secure the column in one of the braked positions.
