Abstract

323,072. Dudgeon, H. M., and Rowland, T. C. E. Oct. 24. 1928. Electric and magnetic; hand and foot actuation; transmitting-mechanism.-A mechanically propelled road vehicle generating its own power as distinct from electric tramway vehicles has its brakes applied by movement of the core of an electromagnetic solenoid supplied with current from an accumulator or a generator on the vehicle. The solenoid may act upon the rigging of the usual hand brake or foot brake or, as shown in Fig. 3, it may act proportionately upon both. The brake pedal is connected by a rod D<3> to an arm on a cross shaft C having cranks E<2> for actuating brake rods E<4>, and the hand brake lever is connected through a rod DD to an arm on a sleeve C' surrounding the shaft C and provided with levers E<1> for actuating brake rods E'. Arms D', D<2> are provided respectively on the sleeve C' and shaft C and these arms are connected by adjustable compression springs J, J<1>, of the required proportionate strengths, to arms G', G<2> of a sleeve B<1> turning on a fixed shaft B. An arm G on the sleeve B' is acted upon by the iron core I of a solenoid H. The solenoid may be energized through a variable resistance, mounted on the steering pillar, comprising a series of contacts U, Fig. 4, and a contact arm T on a sliding sleeve R which can be moved by gripping either of two semicircular handles N beneath the steering wheel L. Alternatively the handles N may close or open a switch and the variable resistance be controlled by the initial movement ot the brake pedal. Further movement of the pedal applies the brakes mechanically if the switch at the steering pillar is left open. A lost motion connection is provided between the rod DD and the hand lever to enable the brakes to be applied electrically without moving the lever and thereby bringing its locking pawl into operation.
