Abstract

Road-traffic signals on vehicles.-Slowing down and stopping signals are given by an electromagnetic relay operated by the brake or driving lever of a tramcar, &c. in which the relay is retained in its position during braking and stopping by a lever locking device electromagnetically released on starting. The switch arm l is rigidly connected with the brake-lever a and its contact f co-operates with contacts g, m so as to close the circuit of the battery b either through the relay h or through the winding n. The locking spring l acts both on the iron core of the coil n and on a pivoted lever k connected to the relay h. If the lever a is moved into braking position, the circuit of the relay h is closed and the switch i closes the circuit of the warning signal d' on the tram or other vehicle and also any trailer signals d<2> arranged in parallel therewith. If the lever a is pushed back into central position,the signals remain switched in since, the spring l presses the lever k against the core of the relay h. On the lever being moved to driving position, the circuit of the winding n is closed and the pull on its core releases the lever k against the influence of the spring and switches out the signals. When braking purely by hand a moving contact n, operated by a handle z co-operates with a contact v to work the signals.
