Abstract
260,344. Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd., (Union Switch & Signal Co.). July 28, 1925. Electric and magnetic; arresting-grips or frictional apparatus on permanent way.-In a braking device located on tracks for railway and like vehicles adapted to engage the vehicle wheels. and rendered operative electrically, each braking element, or pair of braking elements, is actuated by a separate electromagnetic mechanism or electric motor. The braking elements may be arranged to form part of a magnetic circuit, including the vehicle wheel, or may be mounted on resilient arms and brought into operation by an electric motor. In Figs. 1 and 2, the supporting arms 5 of the braking elements 3, 3a adapted to engage the sides of the wheel 2, and the arms 9, 9 of a magnetic yoke attached to the braking elements, are pivoted on the same axis 9 beneath the sleeper 11. Electric current supplied to windings 10, 10a on the arms 9, 9 creates a magnetic flux which brings the braking elements into contact with the wheel with a force depending on the amount of current supplied. In a modification. only one braking element is used and the magnetic circuit is completed through the track trail. In a further modification, the brake element supporting arms are pivoted between the track rails and the brake elements engage the inner sides of a pair of wheels, the magnetic circuit being completed through the axle of the wheels. In Fig. 7, the arms 9, 9 are attached to a horizontal rod 19 and are preferably resilient. The arms 9, 9a are drawn towards one another to bring the braking elements into contact with the wheel by links 16, 16a attached as shown to a disc 18 turned in a clockwise direction by an electric motor 17 through reduction gearing 28. The links 16, 16a may be resilient. In a modification, the bars 9, 9 are drawn towards one another by a rod passing through holes in the bars and having left and right-hand threads coacting with nuts fixed to the bars. An electric motor turns the rod through gearing.
