Abstract
315,259. Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Howard, L. F.). July 10, 1928, [Convention date]. Arresting grips or friction apparatus on permanent way.-In brake apparatus for railway vehicles of the kind comprising a series of spring urged non-articulated brake bars arranged on the track for engagement with the sides of the wheels, the entering end of each bar is at a greater distance from the rail than the leaving end. As shown, a series of brake bars 6, 7 disposed respectively on the two sides of the track rail 1 are connected to a fixed bar 70 by springs G. The ends of the bars at which the wheels enter are as shown normally at a greater distance from the rail 1 than the leaving ends. The bars are arranged to be moved longitudinally so as to bring them to their operative position near to the rails by means such, for example, as are described in Specification 289,459. The springs G are so adjusted or designed that although each one of the series associated with a given bar is compressed to a greater extent than the preceding one as the wheel passes along, substantially the same pressure is exerted on the wheel at all points of the bar.
