Abstract

Arresting-grips or friction apparatus on permanent way. - In railway vehicle braking apparatus comprising a tiltable bar or rail mounted on the permanent way adapted frictionally to engage the wheels of the vehicle under the influence of the weight of the vehicle, the tiltable bar carries a track rail section which is interposed in and in alignment with, the adjacent track rails. The bars g interposed between sections b of the usual track rails and hinged to the track at d carry the rail section h and a brake member j, which engages the sides of the vehicle wheels when these run on the section h. The braking faction is controlled by cams on shafts m which may be connected by levers o and rods p to the piston r of a fluid-pressure cylinder q. With the cams in the lowered position the weight of the vehicle is fully effective for braking. By the admission of fluid behind the piston r the cams are raised and according to the degree of pressure in the cylinder the weight of the vehicle is counteracted to a greater or less extent so that any desired degree of braking effect or none is obtained. The braking effect may be increased by connecting the cams to the bars g and admitting pressure fluid in front of tha piston r so as to force the bars downwardly. Springs may be inserted between the bars and the track for returning them to normal position after passage of the vehicle. The apparatus may be automatically controlled as by an approaching vehicle pressing down a valve and thereby releasing the brakes applied to a preceding vehicle.
