674,228. Railway braking apparatus. UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL CO. Dec. 14, 1948 [Sept. 10, 1948], No. 32366/48. Class 103 (i). In railway braking apparatus of the type comprising brake shoe means 5, 6, 8 and 9 disposed alongside each of the rails 1, 2 and movable into engagement therewith, the operating units which may comprise piston and cylinder devices 11, which are associated with one rail, are staggered with respect to the operating units for the other units, this arrangement being suitable for use on narrow-gauge railways. To prevent any tendency of the vehicle wheels to leave the rails owing to their passing out of the brake mechanism on one side before the other, guide rail members 20, 21, 22, 23 are provided beyond the ends of the brake shoes.
