Abstract
176,041. Rafferty, W. F., and Haines, F. M. Oct. 20, 1920. Skid; scotch blocks.-In a brake for railway vehicles, of the kind in which wedge blocks are adapted to be engaged between the wheels and the rails, the blocks 1 are normally suspended by a spring 16 and a rod 12 attached to a transverse yoke or frame 12 extending between the blocks. The spring 16 is secured at its other end to the underside of the vehicle and the rod 12 to a hand-lever 15 extending through the vehicle floor. Slotted bars 20 fixed to the blocks embrace similarly shaped brackets 18 fixed to the vehicle. In operation, the blocks are forced downwardly and rearwardly by the hand-lever and rod 12 assisted by the tension in the spring 16 and guided bv the brackets 18 and bars 20, so that the wheels completely mount the blocks. The blocks have a recess 6 to receive the wheel flange and a flange 3 to engage the rail groove so that lateral movement of the wheels and the consequent derailing of the vehicle is prevented. Projections 8 on the underside of the blocks increase the friction.
