Abstract
291,798. Ges f³r Oberbauforschung, (Assignees of Hering, E.). June 10, 1927, [Convention date]. Skid; arresting grips or friction apparatus on permanent way. - A brake device for railway vehicles comprises an electromagnetic shoe movably arranged on the track for engagement with the passing vehicle. As shown in Fig. 1, the .electromagnetic shoe 1 arranged on the track and adapted to be magnetically attracted to the side of the wheel is provided with a nose 2 for engagement with the wheel 3. The current is supplied either through rails or the tail rope. According to Fig. 3, an electromagnetic shoe 1 arranged to slide along a fixed rail 4 is provided with a pair of hinged arms 6 which can be swung into the position shown to extend over the wheel rails by the outward movement of a spring 7 under the action of a magnet. The arms 6 can then be engaged by the vehicle wheels and the shoe 1 carried along thereby to give the braking action. The spring 7 serves also to absorb the shock of the impact of the wheels with the arms 6. Further to reduce the shock of engagement the first section of the rail 4 is not made of iron so that the magnetic braking action is delayed. When the current is switched off the spring 7 moves inwards, the arms 6 come together and the brake shoe thus comes to rest. A buffer may be disposed at the end of the rail 4 adapted to move back the spring 7 and permit the arms 6 to come together in case this has not already been effected by cutting off the current. After the current has been switched off, the brake shoe is automatically returned. The engagement of the brake shoe may be helped by an accelerating device which may comprise a spring or a, lever system controlled by the approaching wheel. This may be effected either by providing the shoe with an auxiliary motor acting on running wheels and switched in when the current to the braking magnet is switched off or by a rope attached to the shoe and adapted to be wound upon a motordriven drum. To reduce the impact between the shoe and the vehicle, the movement of the shoe may be initiated by a spring released by the wagon.
