Abstract

Electric and magnetic; hand and foot actuation. -A road or rail vehicle is equipped with one or more eddy current brakes, the magnetic field of which is under'the control of the driver, together with a friction brake of any usual type, and both brakes are controlled by one handle or pedal the movement of which first applies the eddy current brake and afterwards applies the friction brake. A pedal 2, Fig. 1, splined upon a shaft 3 which carries a crank 4 is joined by a rod 5 to a friction brake and through rod 6 to the operating mechanism of the eddy current brake. Rod 6 is pivotally connected to a cam 7 against the edge of which bears a roller 8 carried by a pivoted arm 9 connected by an adjustable link 10 with a crank 11 upon the spindle of an electrical controller. A spring 12 holds the roller 8 against the edge of the cam 7 and a spring 13 serves as a return spring for the pedal 2. The cam 7 is so formed that during the initial part of its rotation it rotates the crank 11, while in the latter part of its movement it maintains the crank 11 in its " on " position. The rod 5 is actuated through the lost-motion coupling shown in Fig 3 ; the point at which the friction brake is' applied can be varied by adjustment of a block 14. According to the Provisional Specification, the eddy current brake may comprise an unwound and suitably cooled rotor coupled with each vehicle wheel axle or driving shaft and a wound stator having its supply from a third rail or overhead wire, or from a battery.
