Class 79(5) [Also in Group XXXIV] Emergency means for braking a motor vehicle comprise a shaft 4 slidable in a tubular member 5 secured to panel 7 and continuously urged by a pre-tensioned spring 13 in a direction such that a collar 8 on the shaft 4 will engage an extension 2 of the brake pedal lever arm 1. The shaft 4 is normally held in inoperative position by a solenoid controlled stop member 11 engaging a recess 9. The stop member 9 may be released to allow the shaft 4 to apply the brakes under the action of spring 13 either by a switch operated by a ring 21 on the steering column or by further switches such as 22 conveniently disposed for operation by passengers. A further switch 23, attached to the steering column 19, is operated through a spring 26 by the member 4 and acts to control the ignition system or, in the case of a diesel engine, the fuel supply.
