An electro-pneumatic control apparatus for railway vehicle brakes, of the kind having one magnet valve 10 for brake application, and one, 11, for brake release, the energization of which is controlled by an equalizing valve, having a piston 14 above which brake pipe pressure P1 is exerted and beneath which equalizing reservoir pressure P2 is exerted, is provided with a driver's brake valve having a manually operable contact member 25 having contacts connected in the circuit of the release magnet valve 11 and operable at will by the driver to effect graduated, continuous or intermittent release when the driver's brake valve is at " release," " running " or " lap " positions, Preferably the manuallyoperable contact member 25 is incorporated in the operating handle of the driver's brake valve and comprises a trigger mechanism 23 in the form of a pivotal lever housed in the underside of the handle and biased by a spring 28 to a normal inoperative position. This arrangement in a system having control throughout the train by wires 6, 7, 9 and a main pipe 2 and brake pipe 3 enables the driver having the handle in his hand to easily manipulate the trigger 23 with his fingers to close contact 25 on terminals 18 and 19, and thus in position III and in the lap or N position, to obtain gradual release, which may be repeated at will.
