Hand actuation.-A tool for applying pressure to or holding a road vehicle brake in any desired position for enabling the brake blocks or bands to be adjusted comprises a device for engaging the pedal, rod or other operating member of the brake mechanism and the seat or other stationary part and means for regulating the distance-between the device and the stationary part. A presser foot 1 for engagement with the brake operating pedal or lever is hing-jointed to a rack 3 which slides in a casing 4 secured to a bar 5 adapted to abut against the seat or other convenient part of the vehicle. The rack 3 can be extended from the casing 4 a desired amount by a worm and worm wheel 9, 8 engaging the rack and operable by a hand-wheel 10. In operation, the vehicle wheels are jacked up, the tool is arranged as shown and the desired pressure is applied to the pedal whereupon the brakes can be adjusted. The extremity of the bar 5 may be forked for engagement with a pedal of the crossbar type, the tool being arranged in the reverse position in this case. Ratchet or screw mechanism may be substituted for the rack-and-pinion mechanism.
