Fluid - pressure; hand actuation.-The piston rod o of a. steam-operated brake is extended out of the top of the cylinder f and is threaded to receive an internally - threaded handwheel q adapted to be screwed down on the top of the cylinder to apply the brake or to hold it in operation. A pin fitted through a cross-head p in the piston rod projects through slots in the side of the cylinder and carries rods t for actuating the brakes. Steam is admitted to and exhausted from the brake cylinder by separate pipes z, y and separate valves in a two-chamber control block. The cylinder may be mounted vertically on a transverse member of the vehicle frame at the back of the driver's seat.
