Abstract
396,694. Vehicle brakes. MALEY, A. W., 4, Grosvenor Road, and TAUNTON, E. M., 11, Wilton Road, both in Handsworth, Birmingham. Jan. 6, 1932, No. 412. [Class 103 (i).] Brake mechanism for rail vehicles comprises on each side of the vehicle, brake shoes engaging the outer sides of the wheels and connected by an equalizing linkage, the two linkages being entirely or substantially mechanically independent and being operable alternatively by hand or fluid pressure. The mechanism on one side of the vehicle comprises brake shoe rods 1, 2 connected to levers 5, 6 connected by a rod 13 which is suspended from the frame by link 14. A hand-operated rod 15 and a cylinder 10 are connected to the lever 5. The mechanism on the other side of the vehicle is the same except that it is turned end for end, the rod 15 extending to the other end of the car. The shoes at each end may be connected by a light transverse beam to which the rods 1, 2 are attached. Hand operation thus applies the shoes mainly on one side of the vehicle but the cylinders 10 are connected to a common source so that the shoes on the two sides are applied equally by the fluid-pressure. The leverage of the levers 5, 6 is arranged to apply greater pressure to the front wheels. According to the Provisional Specification, the two levers 5 may be connected by a sway-bar to which a single cylinder and the two hand operating-members are connected.
