Abstract

482,472. Electric welding ; machinery guards. TAYLOR, G. H., CRAWSHAW, S., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 14, 1936, No. 34329. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIV] An electric spot welding machine of the lever or pedal operated type, has combined therewith a shield surrounding one of the electrodes and carried by operating mechanism linked to the pedal &c. so that further movement of the pedal to apply welding pressure after the electrodes have been brought into contact with the work actuates the shield to move it from a position in which the work is visible to a position tin proximity to or in contact with the work so as to prevent sparks from flying in undesirable directions. The shield together with its operating mechanism may be applied to existing welding machines. The movable electrode 5 is carried by a lever 6 pivoted at 7 and having a pair of rear arms 9 engaging pins 11 on a guide member 12 for a rod 13 and operated by a pedal 15 through a spring 19 pressing on a collar 17 connected bv links 16 to the arms 9. The lever 6 is returned by a weaker spring 19a. To the electrode 5 is secured the crown portion 23 of a flexible shield of leather or other non- inflammable material, the skirt portion 22 of which is carried by rods 24 connected to a frame member 27 adjustably mounted by slots 33 and nuts 32 on a pair of levers 29 pivoted at 30 on supports 31. The rod 13 has secured thereon a stop collar 20 and also a crossbar 37, which latter is provided with rods 35 passing loosely through ears 84 carried by the levers 29 and carrying springs 38 and adjusting nuts 39. On pressing the pedal the rod 13 is moved to cause the electrode 5 to engage the work and at the same time through the crossbar 37, the shield is lowered an amount so as still to leave the work exposed. On further pressure of the pedal the welding pressure is applied by compression of the spring 19 and at the same time the rod 13 operates the levers 29 through the cross-bar 37 to bring down the shield into proximity or contact with the work. The levers 29 engage adjustable stops 41 to limit the lowest position of the shield and the initial and intermediate positions are varied by adjustment of the nuts 39.
