Lasting.-An end-lasting mechanism of the type capable of being moved in a plane transverse to the plane of the sole of the last against the action of spring means is arranged so that by actuation of a treadle the wiper plates may be swung about a fulcrum located at a considerable distance from the wiper plates. The lasting head 9 is supported on a pivot 10 centrally of a bridge piece 11 one end of which is pivoted at 13 to a rod 12 whose lower end is pivoted to the frame at 12a, and the other end of which is pivoted at 15 to a composite rod 14. The rod 14 is rotatable within the sleeve 14b and includes a hand-wheel 27 and a screwed end which enters a nut 28 screwed upon a sleeve 29, thus allowing adjustment of the length of the rod 14. The sleeve 29 has a spindle which projects through a slot in a plate. 8 and is pivoted to an arm 24 carrying a treadle 26. A spring 32 operates between a nut 30 and a loose collar 33 to maintain the spindle, and so the head 9, in its most elevated position. Mounted on the spindle 13 is a plate 19 to which are connected screwed adjusting rods 16, 21 for adjusting respectively the longitudinal and angular position of the head with respect to the last. Heel and toe posts 4 and 4<a> are pivoted to the frame and adjustable in height. In operation the position of the head is adjusted by the hand-wheels 22, 23, and the head is then turned about the pivot 13 by depressing the treadle 26 against the action of the spring 32, in order to press the wipers against the last whilst the lasting, by the usual wipermechanism in the head 9, is in progress.
