Abstract
515,964. Sewing-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and ELLIOTT, H. E. June 17, 1938, No. 17990. [Class 112] In a curved hooked needle machine adapted for sewing together the uppers and soles of turnshoes off the last, having a work-support which is moved to and from the work during each cycle to facilitate feeding, means are provided for varying the movement of the work support during sewing so that it may be sufficient to clear the heel where required and be small enough to avoid engagement with the upper near the toe. The work support is adapted to engage the work yieldingly, its upper end being resiliently mounted on the lower part for this purpose to avoid the necessity for a spring in the actuating mechanism. In the arrangement shown, applied to a machine similar to that described in Specification 476,044, the work-engaging part 103 of the horn is mounted on cranked portions of two pins 113 carried by the lower part 105, the arrangement being such that the tip of the horn moves substantially vertically; a spring-pressed plunger in the part 105 acts on the part 103 through a rod to press the latter towards the work. The horn is freely rotatable on vertically - adjustable member carried by a stud 19 which is vertically slidable in a sleeve 13 under the action of a lever 39; the sleeve 13 is adjustably secured at its lower end to a sleeve 11 which is slidable in the machine frame 9 under the action of a treadle-operated linkage 95 for putting on and removing the work. The lever 39 is connected to a slotted lever 58, pivoted at 37, which lies alongside a slotted lever 59 pivoted at 61 and actuated from a cam lever 71, and the levers 58, 59 are connected by a block 65 engaging their slots and slidable therealong, to vary the ratio between their movements, by a link 75 actuated from another treadle through a crank 77 working between adjustable stops 87.
