[Class 106 (i)] In a motor-driven computing-machine having a laterally movable paper carriage, means are provided under control of the carriage for causing the machine to perform a cycle of operations to effect automatically a blank or spacing operation followed by a total-taking operation. The invention is shown applied to a Sundstrand machine in which the paper carriage 1, Fig. 4, is provided with a pivoted control plate 2 which normally rests on a roller 4 mounted on a housing 5 fixed to the machine frame. The control plate carries stops 25, Figs. 3 and 4, which in the spacing and totaltaking position of the carriage operate a latch plate 18, against the action of a spring 21, to free a pivoted arm 15. The arm 15 is attached to a link 17 connected at its other end to a slide 10 and when freed a spring 8 pulls the slide 10 rearwardly to rock a bell-crank 12 and through engagement with a pin 14 on the motor starting plunger 7 depresses the plunger to initiate an operation. The arm 15 is restored at the end of the cycle of operation by means of a pin 28 on a lever 26 operatively connected with the main rock-shaft 27 of the machine, the pin co-operating with a shoulder 29 on the slide 10. To prevent initiation of the total-taking operation before the spacing cycle is completed the bell-crank 12 is controlled by a latch 30 having an arm 34 that underlies a pin 35 on a pivoted lever 36. In the forward stroke of the rock-shaft 27, a pin 40 on an arm 39 on the shaft engages the upper edge of the lever 36 so as to lift the pin 35 and permit the latch 30 to move to effective position to hold the bellcrank by over-riding the lug 32 thereon. The lever 36 is retained in this position by a detent slide 42 until near the end of the return stroke of the rock-shaft 27. The slide 42 has a squared pin 44 which overlies the end of the lever 36 and the slide is moved forward to effective position by a spring controlled arm 46 when the pin 40 on the arm 39 is moved away from a lug 50 on the arm 46. When the pin 40 engages the lug on the return stroke the arm 46 is rocked rearwardly and a spring 49 withdraws the detent slide 42. When the pin 44 overlies the lever 36, the pin 35 on this lever engages a lug 51 to maintain the plunger 7 in elevated position and thereby prevent depression of the manual starting bar 6.
