The invention has relation to listing adding machines equipped with suitable platens, tabulating means, and means for automatically controlling the functioningof the machine in accordance with the tabulated position of the platen.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as set forth in the appended claims.

In these drawings the invention is shown as applied to` a tabulating and program indexing mechanism constructed in accordance with, the
disclosure of United States Patent No. 2,229,553,

Clutch 24 is adapted to connect the motor 48 with a shaft 56, having fast thereon a crank arm 68 (Figs. 3 and 4) connected by link 61 with a rocker ,69, mounted on shaft 10. Rocker 69 has spring connections 96 with a series of levers 93, connected each by alink 96 with one end of an intermediately fulcrumed lever 86. The other ends of the levers 86 are connected with ieelers 83, having reduced free end portions designed to allow the feelers three positions of adjustment toward the axis of an index tube 82, mounted in the platen carriage, in accordance with the location of a large perforation of said tube, a small perforation or no perforation, in the path of movement of the feeler.
Movement of rocker 69, transmitted from drive shaft 66, will, through springs 94 and suitable guide connections between the rocker and the levers 93, ilrst move these levers forwardly and the Ieelers 83 rearwardly until the ieelers are stopped in one of three positions by index tube 82. Continued movement of rocker 69 will now lift the levers 93 about their connections with the links 96 as a fulcrum, bringing a lug 96 of each lever into contact alternatively with a cam. plate 13; into neutral position between the plates, or into contact with a cam plate '14, according to the positioning of the related feeler 83 bythe index tube 82. Normally, the cam ends of plates 13, 14 are held in operated position by spring means but contact of the lever 93 with either plate will swing it toward the other plate, bringing the outer cam edge of the displaced plate into the path of return movement of a roller 1|, mounted on therocker 69.
Cam plates 13, 1l extend between lugs ||3, ||5 of a gear segment |66, so that the segment will -be held in its median position, or will be rocked in one or the other direction. by the action of roller 1| on the cam plates, in accordance with the indexing of tube 82 in the given position of the platen carriage.
The segments yengage each with a pinion |33 mounted on a shaft' having universal joint vconnection with the shaft |34 (Fig. 5) supporting an accumulator 15.
Each accumulator shaft |34 has fast thereon one or more cams |22, adapted each when the shaft is held by segment |05 in a displaced posi tion to cooperate with a related cam formed upon a rocker 4|3, which is reciprocated once during each registering cycle of the machine. When a cam |22 lies in the path of movement of a cam portion of rocker 4|9, the related accumulator Mounting of the index tube In accordance with the present invention the index tube 82 is mounted in the framing 3 of the platen carriage in a manner allowing for A longitudinal yielding movement between the carriage and the tube. The ends of the tube engage guiding perforations ofthe end plates 3 of the carriage, the walls of these perforations providing slide bearings for the tube. Within one end of tube 82 is tted a thimble 504.(Fig. 1) having a spring plunger 505 which mayl engage anyone of a series of perforations of the tube, and the thimble is further provided with a bolt extension 506, upon which is mounted a sleeve 501 (see also Fig. 2) having a squared outer surface, and held firmly against the thimble by means of a nut and washer 508. Plates 508 have squared perforations engaging the sleeve 501 and are also provided with perforations engaging the stems of a pair of posts 5|0, secured in the framing 3 of the carriage. Springs 5|I, surroundingv the posts 5|0, serve to hold the plates 509 separated, one of said plates taking a bearing against the washer 508 and the other plate against the end' of thimble 504 and also against the framing, by means of suitable washers.
Sleeve 501`-will be held with suicient firmness against thimble 504 to prevent accidental rotary movement of index tube 82, so that the perforations of the tube will be held in alignment with the feelers 83. Also, longitudinal yielding movement is provided for between the platen carrage and the tube, for a purpose to be described hereinafter. 'I'here are several longitudinal series of perforations in index tube 82,'providing each a separate and distinct program of operation for the machine, and one end of the tube is shown as knurled so that the tube may be rotated,
. against the frictional resistance of pin 505, in changing the program, the pin setting in a new hole to providefor angular alignment of the tube to correctly locate the new series of index perforations.
Location of the indem tube It is important that the indextube 82 be accurately located before the feelers 83 are moved towards the axis thereof, for which purpose means are provided as disclosed in United States Patent No. 2,229,553, herelnbefore referred to.
Y This means comprises auxiliary index perforations 500 (Figs. 1 and6) provided in the tube 82, and an auxiliary feeler 50| is pivoted in the framing of the machine at 502. A forward arm .of this feeler has a perforation engaged by one arm of an intermedlately fulcrumed lever 503, the opposite arm of which engages a slot formed in lever 35 (Fig. 3).
Therefore, whenever latch 21 is tripped by the location of the platen carriage in a new position, lever 36, under the influence of its spring, will rock feeler 50| towardv the axis of tube 82. In
case of mislocation of the platen carriage, how-v ever, feeler 50| will travel only a short distance and will be arrested on. tht periphery of tube 82.
According to United States Patent No. 2,229,553, the auxiliary feeler provided for accurate location of the platen carriage and index tube relatively to the feelers 83, before these feelers are moved toward the axis of the tube, thus preventing distortion of the feeler-s by lateral stresses and preventing incorrect setting of the sign control mechanism by misalignment of the index perforations with the feelers. In the present invention the auxiliary feeler also functions to locate the index tube promptly, while the platen carriage, owing to the yieldable connections with the tube, is allowed to vibrate after encountering the tabulator stop. 4
Since it is no longer important that the carriage be promptly located in a tabulated posi` tion, means' are provided forabsorbing the momentum of the carriage and forvbringing it to rest by a harmonic retardation, as follows:

so that the momentum of the platen carriage will be absorbed by a harmonic retardation, after which the carriage will be returned to the correct tabulated position by means of spring 5|4. It will be observed that the harmonic retardation is effected by the engagement of cam face 5|2 with plate 5|3 at a point progressively further away from the fulcrum of lever 20 and progresslvely nearer to the pivot point of plate 5I3.
In a listingadding machine having a yshiftable platen. carriage, tabulating means for said carriage, and means settable to control the functioning of the machine in each tabulated position of the carriage, including an index device movable with the carriage and feelers operable to sensevvsaid device; the combination with means for locating the tabulated 'indexdevice relatively to the feelers; of yieldable connections between the carriage and the index device, and
guide supports for the device designed to allow Y longitudinal displacement thereof relative `to the carriage.
