  • the devices set forth in the above Patent 2,134,280 include means whereby a movement of the platen carriage into each columnar position effects an automatic cycle of operation of the register selection means in order to condition the registers for their normal programs of operations.
  • a movement of the platen carriage into each columnar position effects an automatic cycle of operation of the register selection means in order to condition the registers for their normal programs of operations.
  • An object of the present invention is to obviate the above manual operations and to free the operator for other work, by the provision of means whereby a single operation of a manual control lever acts to initiate an operation and thereafter, independently of the operator, automatically to control means for obtaining a series of vertical totals from a plurality of registers normally programmed for operations in accordance with the columnar positions of the shiftable platen carriage.
  • Means are provided also whereby a movement of the manual control lever in initiating a register control cycle of operation sets devices for modifying the normal register control operations, so that totals are caused to be transferred from a plurality of registers, selected in accordance with the columnar positions of the record carriage, to a common register, and including means for thereafter automatically restoring said manual control lever in a movement of the record carriage to a selective columnar posi tion whereby a subsequent operation of the totalizing devices thereupon automatically prints the algebraic vertical grand total accumulated upon said common register.

v m [x INVENTOR JAMES WDODSWORTH AGENT United States Patent Ofllice AUTOMATIC ToTAL PRINTING IN A LISTING CALCULATOR James W. Dodsworth, Mount Tabor, N. J., assignor to Monroe Calculating Machine Company, Orange, N. J., a corporation of Delaware Application February 25, 1954, Serial No. 412,493 '15 Claims. (Cl. 235-6031) The invention relates to listing calculating machines and more particularly to improvements on the devices set forth in U. S. Patent 2,134,280 issued October 25, 1938 to Loring P. Crosman and entitled Listing Calculator.
The above patent sets forth a means whereby the adjustment of a manual control lever will act to modify well known program control devices, such as fully disclosed in U. S. Patent 1,946,572 issued February 23, 1934 to Loring P. Crosman and entitled Listing Calculator, whereby a vertical total is obtained from selected registers in accordance with the columnar positions of the shiftable platen carriage.
The devices set forth in the above Patent 2,134,280 include means whereby a movement of the platen carriage into each columnar position effects an automatic cycle of operation of the register selection means in order to condition the registers for their normal programs of operations. Heretofore, in vertical total operations however, it was necessary, following an adjustment of the vertical total control lever, to manually jiggle the platen carriage within its columnar position to release the register selection clutch for effecting a second cycle of operation thereof to readjust the accumulators in accordance with the modified control setting required for taking vertical totals.
Also in obtaining the vertical totals from each of a plurality of registers, related to the various columnar positions of the form sheets upon which the said totals are to be printed, it was necessary heretofore first to either normally readjust the vertical total control lever for each vertical total to be taken or manually to hold said lever in its adjusted position, and thereafter effect the total taking operations by manual depressions of the total key.
An object of the present invention is to obviate the above manual operations and to free the operator for other work, by the provision of means whereby a single operation of a manual control lever acts to initiate an operation and thereafter, independently of the operator, automatically to control means for obtaining a series of vertical totals from a plurality of registers normally programmed for operations in accordance with the columnar positions of the shiftable platen carriage.
Means are provided also whereby a movement of the manual control lever in initiating a register control cycle of operation sets devices for modifying the normal register control operations, so that totals are caused to be transferred from a plurality of registers, selected in accordance with the columnar positions of the record carriage, to a common register, and including means for thereafter automatically restoring said manual control lever in a movement of the record carriage to a selective columnar posi tion whereby a subsequent operation of the totalizing devices thereupon automatically prints the algebraic vertical grand total accumulated upon said common register.
With the foregoing and incidental features in view, the invention includes the novel construction and combination of parts, the essential elements of which are set forth in the appended claims and a preferred embodiment of 2,756,926 Patented July 31, 1956 which is hereinafter described in detail with reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of the specification.

In general The adding listing machine to which the invention is shown as applied is of well known type illustrated in the above referred to U. S. Patent 1,946,572, as modified by the U. S. Patent 2,134,280. Reference is also made to U. S. Patent 1,994,211 issued March 12, 1935 to Loring P. Crosman entitled Listing Adding Machine, and to U. S. Patent 1,915,296 issued to said inventor August 22, 1931 entitled Register for further details of mechanisms utilized by this invention but not described in detail. It will be sufficient to describe the machine proper very generally and to say that for each denominational order the machine is provided with a three armed differential actuator lever numbered 610 (Fig. 3) loosely mounted on a shaft 608. The forward arm of each lever 610 termimates in a segmental registering rack; the rearward arm has a lister type bar 611 pivoted thereto, and the upper arm has pivotal connection with a differential stop bar 615 cooperating with a bank of digit keys 215 to limit the movement of the lever 610.
The digit keys are depressible to represent a value and when depressed are latchd in position with th bottoms of their stems lying in the path of movement of the related stop lugs of the bars 615, and allow such bars to advance a distance proportionate to the value of the depressed key, upon operation of the machine. Depression of a digit key will also remove a column latch 214 from the path of movement of its related bar 615, which latches prevent movement of a stop bar 615 and lever 610 in any column in which no key is depressed.
A rock shaft 301 is provided with cam means 318 for governing the movement of a spring tensioned rocker frame 616, carrying a series of dogs 617, normally engaged by stud 659 of the lever 610. As shaft 301 is rotated forwardly (counterclockwise in Fig. 3) frame 616 will be rocked about shaft 608, and any of the levers 610 which have been released by depression of digit keys 215 will be allowed to rotate, under the influence of their springs 683, until they are stopped by the lugs of bar 615, contacting with the stems of the keys. Upon rearward (return) rotation of shaft 301, the dogs 617 will return the operated levers 610 to normal position. This excursion of levers 610 serves to register amounts set in the keyboard upon one or more accumulators and to set up a similar amount on the printing line of the type bars.
Shaft 301 is oscillated by an electric motor 48, connected through suitable gearing and clutch means, with a crank arm (Fig. 4) connected by a rod 161 to an arm 316, fast upon shaft 301, so that as crank arm 155 is rotated, shaft 301 will be oscillated.
Motor operation is normally controlled by motor bars or keys through a clutch lever 158 which is provided with a roller adapted -to close contact member 64 (Fig. '7) in the motor circuit after lever 15!) is moved out of restraining engagement with the spring operated clutch. A spring 151 tends to pull lever 150 away from the clutch, the lever being normally-held in clutch engaging position by means of a latch 148. Latch 148 is controlled by a trigger 147, lying in the path of movement of a lever arm 138 connected with a motor key 138. Upon depression of key 138 trigger 147 is rocked clockwise to release latch 148 and clutch lever 150 will be pulled out of engagement with the clutch to start the machine in operation.
Upon release of key 138, latch 148 will return under spring action into latching position and, toward the end of the cycle of operation, an arm 155 connected with the crank member 155 will contact a tooth 150 of the clutch lever 150 and will force said lever back into latching position, breaking the electric circuit and bringing the end of lever 150 into the path of movement ,of the rotating clutch pawl 153 to terminate the cycle.
Means are provided as more fully disclosed in U. S. Patent 2,134,280 of reference for throwing the pinions 472 (Fig. 3) of accumulators No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 into mesh with the segments 610 either during the forward stroke of said segments, to eifect subtractive registration on the accumulators or during return stroke of the segments to effect additive registration thereon. This means comprises a series of cams on the register shafts 403 and a series Of cooperating cams connected with rocker plates 419 (Fig. 4) so arranged that when the high points of the cams upon the shaft 403 register with the high points of the cams connected with the plates .419, the register pinions will be moved into mesh with the segments 610, against the tension of suitable springs. The register shafts being guided in their movements into and out of mesh with the segments by engagement with the walls of suitable slotted recesses in a fixed frame plate.
As shown, the two upper accumulators, No. 1 and No. 2 are capable of additive or subtractive registration, while the No. 3 and No. 4 accumulators are designed for addition only. Any of the accumulators may be disabled, or adjusted to non-add condition by appropriate location of the cams carried by the shafts 40.3.
In order that the No. 1 and No. 2 accumulators may be set for addition or subtraction, the shafts 403 of these accumulators are provided with two cams 121 and 122 projecting from the shaft in difierent angular directions. Thus, rotation of shaft 403 will move the pants 121 out of registering position and the cams 122 into registering position, a further rotation of the shaft moving both cams out of registering position. Two plates 419 are shown, connected by a pin and slot device for movement in opposite directions. Each plate 419 is provided with cams 124. lying in the plane of and cooperating with the cams 122, and cams 438, lying in the plane of the cams 121. The plates 419 are rocked to change the position of the cams 124 and 438 relative to their cooperating cams at the end of the forward stroke of the segments 610, and may also be rocked at the beginning of the registering operation, one of the plates 419 having link connection 321 with a rocker 325 for this purpose. Rocker 325 is controlled by two cam arms 316 and 320, secured upon rock shaft 331, the arm 316 being adapted to engage a cam follower 327 pivoted upon the rear end of rocker 325 and arm 320 adapted to engage a similar cam follower 328 pivoted upon the forward end of the rocker. Fig. 4 illustrates rocker 325 in its condition of normal operation, in which an adjustable plate 326 is so positioned as to prevent counterclockwise pivotal movement of the rear cam follower and to prevent clockwise pivotal movement of the forward cam follower, this plate being adapted to rock with rocker 325. At the beginning of a registering operation cam arm 320, contacting the forward cam follower 328 will move the rocker 325 in clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 4, rocking the plates 419 to bring the cams 124 thereof into registering position. On Fig. 4 the cooperating cam 122 is in inactive position, and, since the cam 438 was moved away from cam 121 by the rocking of plate 419, the No. 1 accumulator will be allowed to move out of mesh with the segments, and no subtractive registration will occur therein. No. 2 accumulator however, is set with cam 122 in operative position, and the rocking of plate 419 will bring cam 124 into contact with cam 1.22, so that the No. 2 accumulator will be thrown into mesh and subtraction will be effected. On the beginning of the return stroke of the cam arms 316, and 321i, arm 316 will contact with the rear cam follower 327 and will move the rocker 325 back into the position illustrated in Fig. 4, wherein the cams 124 will be moved to inactive position and the cams 438 into active position, so that addition will be effected on the No. 1 accumulator, while the No. 2 accumulator is allowed to move out of mesh.
The No. 3 and No. 4 accumulators are provided with cams made each in the form of a disc having a flat tened side 136. In Fig. 4 the flattened side 136 of the cams 135 are shown as lying opposite the cooperating pawls 137, so that no registration of these accumulators No. 3 and No. 4 will be effected. One of the pawls 137 has link connection with one of the plates 419, and also engages at its free end with the free end of the other pawl, so that upon movement of the plates 419 both of these pawls will drop away from the cams 135, and will be returned into the position shown in Fig. 4 at the beginning of the return stroke of the segments. Therefore, if the cams 135 have been adjusted to bring their semi-cylindrical walls opposite the pawls 137, the No. 3 and No. 4 accumulators will be moved into mesh at this time and addition will be etfected.
Total takmg A total standing in any one of the registers may be cleared therefrom and printed on the record sheet in well known manner, by engaging the pinions 472 of the register with the segments 610 and thereafter successively releasing the difiercntial stop bars 615 to allow the segments 610 to rotate the accumulator wheels subtractively until suitable zero stops 457 (Fig. 3) thereon engage cooperating stops 613, which have been brought into their path of movement. The column latches 214 are lifted free of stop bars 615 and the levers 610 thereafter successively released from the restoring frame 616 upon depression of the total key 278 in the following manner, and as more fully described in reference Patent 1,994,211.
The rearward end of total key 278, upon depression of said key will engage a stud 279 (Fig. 5) to impart clockwise movement to a bail 280. Bail 280 is provided with a cross-over member 281 overlying the forward end of the column latches 214 and will therefore, when so moved, rock said latches free of the stop bars 615.
A shaft 282, having its right hand end formed as a crank arm projects over therearward end of the total key, and is caused to be rocked counterclockwise upon depression of said key.
Secured to shaft 282 is an arm 283 adapted to impart clockwise movement to a latch 6213, upon the above described movement of said shaft, by engagement with a pin 284 secured to control arm 621, pivotally mounted upon said latch.
Latch 620 normally engages a lug 627 on total segment 618, preventing movement of said segment under influence of the total spring 681. Upon tripping of the latch, however, segment 618 will be rocked upwardly about its fulcrum point 628 and will impart counterclockwise rotation, through gear 629, to a shaft 607 (Fig.3). Shaft 607 extends transversely of the machine and is provided with a series of helically arranged pins adapted during rotation of said shaft to trip, successively from right to left, the series of latching dogs 617, mounted upon the frame 616 and engaging pins of the levers 610, as earlier described.
Tripping of dogs 617 will also release spring tensioned stop members 613 permitting said members to move into the path of movement of the zero stops 457 on the accumulator wheels.
As each lever 610 is released, its spring 683 will rotate it until the related accumulator wheel has been rotated reversely to zero, when stop 457 will contact with member 613. The value subtracted from the wheel is now represented by the type lifted to the printing line.
When this zeroizing operation has progressed to the left hand side of the machine a stud 630 (Fig. in the total segment 618 will contact with a projection 129 of a rod 13%) connected at its other end to the latch member 148 (Fig. 4). Latch 148 will thus be moved out of engagement from clutch lever 150, and effect operation of the cyclic clutch devices, as in the manner earlier described. The machine being put in operation the printing hammers will be tripped to print the total and the levers 610 and total key 278 returned to normal, in the well known manner fully set forth in the patents of reference.
Operation of the total key 278 is also designed to reverse the effective action of the cams 124 and 438 (Fig. 4), so that a register which has been adjusted for additive accumulation will need no adjustment when a total is taken therefrom. For this purpose a projection of the total key lever engages a pin 352 on the plate 326, and readjusts said plate relative to rocker 325, this readjustment bringing the lower hook end of plate 326 in front of a pin 329 and removing the shoulder of said plate from engagement in rear of said pin. A cam face of plate 326 also engages a pin 330 in the upper end of the rear cam follower 327 and rocks said follower pivotally out of the path of movement of cam arm 316.
Therefore, during a total taking operation cam arm 320 will rock the forward cam follower 328 pivotally during the forward stroke, without moving the rocker 325, thereby leaving the cams 438 opposite the cams 121. During the return stroke of the segments 610, cam arm 320 will engage the forward cam follower 328 and move the rocker 325 and plate 419 to remove the cams 438 from engagement with the cams 121, so that the registers which are set for additive accumulation will move out of mesh with the segments 610. Accumulators wherein the cams 122 are caused to be set to active position during the taking of a total from another accumulator will be thrown into mesh during the return stroke of the segments and will thus accumulate the total cleared from said other accumulator.
In the machine illustrated, the upper or No. 1 accumulator is a cross footer, designed to accumulate the values entered into each of the other accumulators during a single series or line of entries. No. 2 accumulator is customarily a debit register, and is set for subtractive operation, it being noted that a complementary value will stand on this No. 2 accumulator, and that the addition of this complementary value to another (the No. 1) accumulator during the taking of a total will be equivalent to the subtraction of the true amounts registered in No. 2 accumulater from the amounts registered in the No. 1 accumulato-r. entries in each of the accumulators No.2 to No. 4 may be taken, these totals being transferred to the No. 1 accumulator to show a grand total.
Carriage controlled program mechanism Means are provided, as hereinafter described, for setting the various accumulators to add, subtract or nonadd, in accordance with the tabular position of the record carriage.
A tabulating program bar 1 (Fig. 6) suitably supported in the end frames of the transversely shiftable record carriage is provided with a series of notches 2. Said notches are spaced in accordance with the columnar positions of a given form sheet, and adapted by engagement with a projection 6 of a detent lever 7 to secure the car- Thus, a vertical total or a total of all of the riage against lateral movement under the influence of a spring drum 8.
During a machine cycle of operation a trigger 184 is caused to be reciprocated in well known manner, first upwardly and then downward, to thereby disengage the detent 7 from the shoulder 193 of the notched tabulator bar 1.
The carriage, being thus freed from the restraint of detent 7, near the end of the cycle will be shifted by means of spring drum 8 until the detent is engaged by the shoulder or wall 193 of the next adjacent notch of bar 1. This engagement serves not only to arrest the platen carriage in its next tabular position, but also effects engagement of the well known clutch means 24 shown in Fig. 7, for effecting an operation of the accumulator control mechanism in the following manner, and as more fully set forth in the above reference patents.
Detent lever 7 is pivotally mounted at 19 upon a lever 21') intermediately fulcrumed at 21 upon the rear casing of the machine and provided with a stud 23 adapted to contact with said casing through a suitable aperture 10, thus limiting the movement of lever 29. Upon release of detent 7, the detent spring 22 will rock lever 20 into the dotted line position, moving stud 23 past a click pawl 25 (Fig. 7).
Reengagement of detent 7 with the tabulator bar 1 however will cause lever 20, under pull of the spring drum 8, to move back to the full line position of Fig. 6, bringing pin 23 against pawl 25 and thereby rocking a latch 27, on which said pawl is mounted, out of engagement with a spring operated lever 33, fulcrumed at 34 on the framing.
Upon operation lever 33 will engage a pin 37 fixed to a clutch control lever 38, moving the latter about fulcrum 40, out of engagement with the usual pawl of the spring engaged one cycle clutch means 24, of well known design.
Clutch 24 is adapted to connect the motor 43 with a shaft 56, having fast thereon a crank arm 58 (Figs. 2 and 7), connected by link 67 with a rocker 69, mounted on shaft 70. Rocker 69 has spring connections 94 with a series of levers 93, connected each by a link 96 with one end of whiflletrees 86 (Fig. 7). The other ends of the whifiietrees are connected with feelers 83, having reduced free end portions adapted to allow the feelers three positions of adjustment toward the axis of an index tube 82, mounted in the platen carriage, in accordance with the location of a large perforation of said tube, a. small perforation or no perforation, in the path of movement of the feeler.
Movement of rocker 69, transmitted from drive shaft 56, will, through springs 94 and suitable guide connections 92 between the rocker and the levers 93, first move these levers forwardly and the feelers S3 rearwardly until the feelers are stopped in one of three positions by index tube 82.
The feelers 83 being moved toward the tube 82 will be immediately arrested, if no perforation of said tube is in line with the feeler, whereas if a large perforation of the tube 82 is opposite the feeler said feeler will move freely to its full extent of movement. If a small perforation of the tube 82 is opposite one of the feelers 83, the shoulder of the feeler will contact with the marginal walls of the perforation and the feeler will be held in an intermediate position.
Levers 93 (Fig. 2) are provided with lugs 98, these lugs taking one of three positions, in accordance with the position of the related feeler, so that the lugs are brought under the surface 99 of a dog 74, under the surface 102 of a dog 73 or to a position immediately beneath a shaft supporting the dogs 73 and 74. Normally dogs 73 and 74 are locked in either a raised or a lowered position by engagement of a roller 71 of the plate 69 with the upper or with the lower surface of the dogs. Upon move ment of the plate 69 however, roller 71 will be moved out of engagement with the dogs 73, and 74, and these dogs will be allowed to assume the position illustrated in Fig. 2, under influence of a connecting spring 75. However, if the lug 98 of lever Q3 has been positioned by the related feeler under the surface 99 of dog 74, the spring 94 will cause the dog to be moved downwardly, until the point of the dog lies below roller 71. Continued rotation of shaft 55 will rock the plate 69 in an opposite direction, and the roller 71 thereupon acting upon the dog 74 will rock the dog downwardly into a lowered position. On the other hand contact of lug d8 with surface 102 of dog 73 will position said dog for an upward movement by the action of roller '71. Dog 73 contacts with a lug 113 of a segment 105, and dog 74 contacts with an opposite lug 115 of said segment. Therefore, the positioning of the two dogs on opposite sides of the roller 71, as shown in Fig. 2 will hold segment 165 in a central position while location of the dogs below the roller 71 will position the segment M in a lower position, and location of the dogs above the roller 71 will raise the segment. There are four pairs of dogs 73-, and 74 and four segments 105, each segment being engaged with a pinion 133 mounted upon a universal jointed extension of one of the accumulator shafts 4%, and the position of the segments by the dogs above described provides the three positions of a radial adjustment of the shafts 4G3 and the cams carried thereby. On the machine illustrated however, only two adjusted positions of the parts are taken by the devices related to the No. 3 and N0. 4 accumulators, since the feelers thereof are not adapted for intermediate adjustment. When the feelers 83 of these accumulators meet an unperforated portion of the tube 82, the cams 135 will be positioned with their flat faces 135 opposite the pawls 137, providing for a non-add adjustment of the accumulators, while movement of a feeler 33 into a per foration of tube 02 will move the cams 135 into position to cooperate with the pawls 137, providing for addition on the related accumulator.
As earlier set forth cams 121 and 122 of the No. 1 and No. 2 accumulators are arranged in different angular position upon their shafts. That is, from a position of adjustment of the shaft 1 wherein neither earn 121 nor 122 is in active position, a one third rotation of the shaft 4433 of the No. l accumulator in a counter-clockwise direction (Fig. 4) will bring the lobe of earn 122 into active position, whereas a similar movement of the shaft 403 of the No. 2 accumulator will bring the lobe of cam 12} into active position. This one step of counterclockwise movement is effected by movement of a feeler 83 from its non-add position, against the unperforated surface of tube 82, into its midway position, in which the shoulder of the plunger engages the marginal wall of a small hole of the tube 82. The effect is to set the No. 1 accumulator into subtracting position and the No. 2 accumulator into adding position. A second step of counterclockwise adjustment of these shafts ill?) will render the adding earn 121 of the No. l accumulator active and the subtracting cam 122 of the No. 2 accumulator active, this being the position taken upon movement of the feelers 83 into the large perforations of the tube 82, and also being the position of the cams illustrated in Fig. 4.
Program modifying devices Means are provided, as disclosed in U. S. Patent 2,134,280, whereby the operator may modify the adjustment of certain of the accumulators called for by the program mechanism in any particular tabulated position of the record carriage.
For this purpose a cylinder 3590 (Figs. 2 and 7) is rotatably mounted in the frame of the machine, said cylinder being notched as at 331 to provide seats for the stop lugs 382 of slides 333. Normally these slides are held out of contact wi h the cylinder 3526, by means of a lever 335 urged forwardly by a spring 386 and adapted to hold an arm 387 of said lever against lugs 388 of the slides. Lever 385 extends above the keyboard of the machine,
and when moved rearwardly by the operator, against the tension of the spring 336, suitable connecting springs 334 of the slides 383 are tensioned and will serve to move the slides downwardly into contact with the cylinder 3%. If cylinder 35,0 has been adjusted so that a notch 3&1 is below one of the lugs 3.82, the related shde 383 will be allowed to move downwardly into its operative position, in which the lower end of the slide will lie in the path of movement of a pin 389 extending above the pivotal points of junction of the levers 36 with the links $6. Should no notch 381 of cylinder 38.9 lie below a lug 3S2 of a slide 383, said slide will be held in inoperative position, above the path of movement of the related pin 389.
There are two series of slides 383, comprising a rearward series lying adjacent the pins 3.89, and adapted to prevent movement of the feelers 33 beyond their position of contact with the tube 32. The slides 383 of the forward series are spaced from the related pins 339 by a distance corresponding to the movement of the feeler plungers into contact with the marginal walls of the small perforations of the tube 82. Therefore, the slides 333 0.5 he rearward series are adapted to hold the feelers in non-add position, while the slides 383 of the forward series are adapted to hold the No. 1 accumulator in adding position regardless of whether the feelers register with a small or with a larger perforation of tube 82.
On the machine illustrated, slides 333 are provided for the feelers of the No. 1 and No. 2 accumulators, and the guide rods 3% between which the slides are mounted are provided with seats for slides 383 related to the No. 3 and No. 4 accumulators, and designed to hold such accumulators in non-add position. Such additional slides 383 would be duplicates of the slides of the rearward series related to the No. l and No. 2 accumulators, and would not necessarily be provided in any given machine.
The cylinder 380 is provided with notches 381i opening in different angular positions about the axis of the cylinder, so that rotation of the cylinder, by means of a hand knob 391 will bring different combinations of notches under the lugs 382 of the slides. The tube 82 is adjustable into different angular positions, to bring different series of perforations in line with the plungers 83, and 84, so that different programs are provided for, these v programs being customarily numbered upon the tube adjusting members. Similar numbers may be applied to the knob 391, so that the cylinder 38% may be set into position to correctly modify any selected program.
Posting routine Ledger Statement Old Bel. Checks Deposits New Sol.
The ledgerand statement forms are both first inserted in the usual manner upon the platen carriage, with the carriage positioned in its extreme right hand position, so that the left hand or Old Balance column of the ledger sheet is in 'pri ting position relative to the type bars 6'11. With the carriage so placed the program tube 82 will present the larger diameter of perforations of said tube adjacent to the feelers 83 related to the No. l and No. 4 registers and no perforations of said tube will be adjacent the No. 2 and No. 3 registers so that the register selection means will act to adjust the No. l and No. 4 registers for additive operation while the No. 2 and No. 3 registers are controlled for non-add operations. The amount of 100.00 (being the amount carried forward from a previous operation) is now set up on the digit keys 215 and a machine cycle of operation then initiated by depression of the operating key 138 to accumulate said amount in the No. 1 and No. 4 registers and to print the same upon the ledger sheet, all as in the manner previously described. Following the printing operation the carriage is then released and tabulated in usual manner to the adjacent or Checks columnar position of the statement form sheet.
At this position of the carriage the program bar 82 presents a small diameter perforation to the feeler 83 controlling the No. 1 register and the larger diameter perforation to the No. 2 register feeler, while no perforations of said tube will be opposite the No. 3 and No. 4 feelers. Thus as the carriage moves into the Checks columnar position both the No. 1 and the No. 2 registers are set for a subtractive operation, and registers No. 3 and No. 4 for a non-add operation. It may be noted that a small diameter perforation of tube 82 effects a subtractive operation for the No. I register while a large perforation is required for a subtractive control of the No. 2 register. This is due to the different angular arrangement of the cams 121, and 122 upon their respective accumulator shafts 403 earlier described, which arrangement provides for alternate engagement of said registers with the actuators 610 within a cycle of operation, thereby enabling a transfer of values from the No. 2 register to the No. I register during a total taking operation to he described.
A check item in the amount of 25.00 is now set up on keys 215 and will be entered subtractively into registers No. 1 and No. 2 upon operation of key 138, following which the platen carriage will tabulate, in the manner as earlier described, to the next adjacent or Deposits columnar position.
In the Deposit columnar position tube 82 will present a large diameter perforation to the feelers 83 related to the No. 1 and No. 3 registers and no perforations of said tube will be opposite the feelers 83 related to registers No. 2 and No. 4. It will be recalled that the cams 135 for the No. 3 and No. 4 registers are controlled for plus operations by a large perforation and for non-add operations if no perforation of tube 82 is adjacent the related feelers 83 for said registers. Therefore, as the record carriage is moved into the Deposit columnar position registers No. 1 and No. 3 will both be set for an additive operation, and no perforation of tube 82 appearing opposite the feelers for the No. 2 and No. 4 registers said registers at this time will be controlled for non-add operations.
The deposit item of 80.00 set up on keys 215 will thus be entered additively into registers No. 1 and No. 3, following an operation of key 138, and the carriage again tabulates to the next adjacent, or New Balance, columnar position.
In the New Balance columnar position of the record carriage a large perforation of tube 82 appearing opposite feeler 83 controlling the No. I register will set the control means for said register for a plus operation, and, no perforations of tube 82 being opposite plungers 83 for the Nos. 2, 3, 4, registers, said registers will be set for non-add operations.
It will be obvious, therefore, that the upper or No. 1 accumulator serves as a cross footer, designed to accumulate the values entered into each of the other accumulators during a single series or line of entries. A total from said cross footer register is at this time effected automatically under control of the platen carriage, following which the platen carriage is returned to the Old Balance starting position, as follows:
As the platen carriage tabulates into the New Balance columnar position a cam plate 204 (Figs. 1 and 6) fast upon a transverse bar 195 secured within the car- 10 riage end plates, is brought to rest upon a roller 201 fast to a lever 202 secured to a transverse shaft 203, loosely supported within the end framing of the machine base. During this movement cam plate 204 will rock roller 201 downwardly and shaft 203 will be rocked counterclockwise, as viewed in Fig. 1.
Secured to the left hand end of shaft 203 is an arm 206 having pin and slot connection 207 with a lever 208 fulcrumed upon the framing of the machine by stud 209. The forward end of lever 208 has engagement with the projection 210 of a pawl 211, pivotally mounted at 247 upon a bell crank lever 248, and is adapted to hold said pawl normally out of the path of movement of a stud 68 secured in the rock arm 69.
Counterclockwise movement of shaft 203, however, will cause arm 206 to impart a clockwise movement to the lever 208 and the forward end of said lever, moving away from projection 210, will allow pawl 211, under influence of its spring 216, to fall and rest upon pin 68.
Bell crank 248 is pivotally mounted to the framing at 249 and the forward arm of said bell crank forms toggle link connection 250 with an arm 251 fast to a shaft 252 normally tensioned under influence of a suitable spring 253 for clockwise rotation, as viewed in Fig. 1.
Spring 253 through toggle action of link 250 serves to hold lever 248 normally against the stud 254 fast in the framing of the machine.
During the reciprocatory movement of rock arms 69, previously described, however, the surface 255 of pawl 211 will fall into the path of return movement of the stud 68. Lever 248 during the last portion of the return movement of said stud will thus be rocked counterclockwise beyond toggle center position whereupon spring 253 will act to complete the movement, imparting a clockwise rotation to the shaft 252 until stopped by contact of an arm 256 of lever 248 with stud 254.
Pivotally mounted at 257 (Fig. 5) upon a crank arm 258, secured to the right hand end of shaft 252, is a finger 259, provided with a projection 260 normally overlying the forward end of the total key 278. In the above described operation of shaft 252 finger 259 is carried downwardly and depresses the total key 278, to thereby effect an automatic operation of the totalizing devices, as in the manner earlier set forth.
Near the end of the rotation of shaft 252 (counterclockwise as viewed in Fig. 5) the surface 264 of finger 259 will contact the hub of crank arm 258 and cause said finger to be rocked free of the total key 278.
It will be noted that While the larger perforation of tube 82 calls for a plus operation of the No. 1 register the depression of total key 273 conditions the C3111 followers 327 23 of Fig. 4 so that at this time a subtract control of said register is caused to be effected, as heretofore described.
Automatic means for returning the platen carriage Following the above automatic total printing operation the platen carriage is returned automatically to its extreme right hand position in the following manner, and as more fully described in reference Patent 1,994,211.
Secured to the transverse bar of the platen carriage is a cam shoe 200 (Figs. 5 and 6) adapted as the carriage tabulates to the New Balance columnar position to engage and depress a roller 197 of an arm 198 fast to a square shaft 199, loosely mounted within the left and right end framing of the machine. Depression of roller 197 imparts a clockwise movement (as viewed in Fig. 5) to shaft 199 and thereby to an arm 218 secured to the right hand end of shaft 199.
Clockwise movement of arm 213 is adapted to tension a spring 219 connected between said arm and the lower end of a link 220. The upper end of link 220 is pivotally connected at 221 to a latch 222, pivotally mounted upon a plate 223, fulcrumed to the machine framing at 62.
As shown in Fig. 5, latch 222 will be held by tension 11 of spring 219 against .a roller 224, fast to a lever 163 secured to shaft 164 and having link connection .162 with the cam arm 316. During the forward movement of arm 3,16 lever 163 is also rocked forwardly, whereupon hook end 225 of latch 222 will he moved into the path of return movement of roller 224.
Upon completion of the above New Balance total printing cycle of the machine the roller 2274, in returning to its normal position, will engage the hook end 225 of latch 222. and cause plate 223 to be rocked upwardly, and a flexible link 226 connected between plate 223 and clutch operating member 227 will eifect the engagement of well known friction clutch means to cause return movement of the carriage.
As the carriage is brought to its extreme right hand starting columnar position a second cam shoe 2 5 on bar 135 will rock roller 197 upwardly to impart counterclockwise movement to shaft 199.
Counterclockwise m vement of shaft 199 will cause a pin 244 fast to lever 2.18 to move link 22f downwardly and disengage hook end 225 from roller 224, releasing plate 223 and clutch operating arm 22'] and thereby terminating the carriage return movement.
Automatic vertical totals As earlier stated the present invention provides novel and improved means whereby a Single manipulation of the vertical total lever 385 is adapted not only to modify the normal control of the program devices as heretofore known to the art, but to also initiate and effect a vertical total operation, and thereafter entirely independent of the operator effect vertical total operations automatically from selective registers in accordance with the columnar position of the shiftable carriage for a plurality of the other columns represented upon the record sheets, and
including also an algebraic grand total of said vertical totals.
With the carriage again now positioned in the first or Old Balance columnar position the operator, noting that the above series of operations represents a final line of entries, will then initiate an Old Balance vertical total operation by merely adjusting the vertical total lever rearwardly. A rearward setting of lever 385 will initiate the Old Balance register selection cycle of operation of clutch 24, adjust means to cause subsequent automatic operation of the totalizing devices and will also adjust the program modifying devices so that a totalizing operation, effective automatically, upon the No. 4 register will transfer any totals registered thereon to the No. It register, as will be described.
Pivotally mounted at 392 (Fig. l) to the left side framing of the machine is a three armed lever 393. The forward arm of lever 393 is provided with a lug .394 extending beneath the rearward arm 385 of lever 385. A rearwardly extending arm of the lever 393 has link connection 395 with a forwardly extending arm 3% of a bail member 397, pivotally supported upon transverse shaft 2%3. The right side of bail 397 terminates in a forwardly extending arm 3%, which extends beneath one arm of a bell crank lever 399 (Fig. 7), pivotally mounted at 490 to the rear casing of the machine. An upper arm of hell crank 399 is provided with a pin 401 embracing an L shaped notch 402 formed in one end of a slide 494 as shown, the opposite end of slide 494 being supported through pin and slot connection 465 to a suitable subframing of the machine. Upon rearward movement of vertical total lever 385 lever 393 is rocked clockwise, as viewed in Fig. l, and link 395 imparts counterclockwise movement to bail 397, whereupon said bail imparts counterclockwise movement to bell crank 399, causing pin dill to move slide 464 leftward (Fig. 7). Upon leftward movement of slide add an upwardly extending arm it thereof will engage a pin 4% mounted on the latch 27, rocking said latch out of engagement with the register selection clutch release lever 33, to thereby effect a cycle 12 of operation of the register selection clutch 24, as in the manner earlier described.
As shown in Fig. l a suitable spring tensioned check pawl .4512, pivotally mounted to the machine framing at .433, will serve to hold the vertical total lever and parts associated therewith in their operated position, until said lever is caused to be returned automatically at the completion of the series of vertical total operations, in the manner as hereinafter to be described.
A rearward arm of clutch lever 33 however has slotted connection with a lug 407 of a lever 403, fulcrumed to the rear framing of the machine at 499, and said lever 408 extends beneath a lug 410 of the slide 404. During the above described movement of lever 33 the lever 408 is rocked counterclockwise and will lift slide 404, permitting the slide, under influence of a spring 411, connected thereto and to the lower end of bell .crank 399, to be returned toward the right along slot 452, thereby releasing latch 27 for re-engagement with clutch lever 33 for terminating the register selection operation.
During the above register selection cycle the program modifying cylinder 38% through slides 383 limits the feeler $3 related to the No. l register for a partial movement and thereby modifies the normal plus control thereof of said register to a minus operation control, while an imperforate portion of tube 82 will limit movement of feelers of the No. 2 and No. 3 registers for a non-add operation control, and feeler 83 related to the No. 4 register, again engaging the large perforation of tube 82 will eifect a plus operation control of said register.
A rearward adjustment of the vertical total lever 385 now also controls devices whereby an operation of the register control means by the register selection clutch will act to effect an automatic operation of the total taking devices, as follows;
Lever 393 is provided with a downwardly extending arm 393' laying forwardly of the connecting pin 207 of lever 2% which embraces the bifurcated end of the lever 26%. As earlier described lever 208 normally holds the pawl 211 from operating engagement with pin 68 of the rock arm 69, operated by the register selection clutch. Upon rearward adjustment of the vertical total lever, however, the lever 393 will engage pin 2il7 rocking lever 208 clockwise, releasing said lever from lug 210 of pawl 211. Upon subsequent operations of rock arm 69 pin 68 engaging surface 255 .of pawl 211 then acts through lever 248 to break the toggle means 250, whereupon said means will act to effect depression of the total key 278, as in the manner previously described.
It will be recalled that an operation of the total key 278 acts to adjust the cam followers 327-323, shown in Fig. 4, whereby the rocker 325 will adjust the cams 124 and -538 so as to reverse the eifective action of said cams. Therefore, the No. 4 register, which during the selection cycle has been adjusted for additive accumulation, will during the above total taking operation be engaged during the forward stroke of the actuators 610 and disengaged from said actuators during the return movement thereof. Also, at this time control of the No. 1 register, which has been modified for a subtractive operation in the selection cycle, is again reversed so that said register will now be moved out of engagement with actuators 510 prior to a movement thereof and reengaged therewith for their return movement, so that the old balance total (160.00) taken from the No. 4 register will thus be transferred upon register No. 1.
Following the Old Balance printing and transfer operation the platen carriage then tabulates in known manner to the adjacent or Checks columnar position, where stud 23 (Figs. 6 and 7) again eiiects release of the register selection clutch 24, as previously described.
At this time, lever 385 having remained latched in rearward set position the stud 68 ofrock arm 69 will effect an automatic operation .of the total key 278. Also lever 335 being in rearward position, the notch 381 of cylinder 380 relative to the No. 2 register will modify the normal subtractive program control of its related feeler 83 by the large diameter perforation of tube 82 to an additive control operation, while a small diameter perforation of tube 82 at this time effects subtractive adjustment of the No. 1 register.
Depression of total key 278 has again, however, reversed the elfect of register control cams 124, so that the No. 2 register will be engaged with the actuators 610 during the forward stroke and register No. 1 on the return stroke thereof.
it is recalled that values are entered upon the No. 2 register as complements. However, suitable well known negative total devices, employing three consecutive subtractive operations of the actuators 610, in the manner fully disclosed in U. S. Patent 1,915,296 issued August 22, 1931 to Loring P. Crosman, and entitled Register," are provided for transposing and thereafter printing of a complemental total as a true value. During the above conversion of the No. 2 register value the No. 1 register, being controlled for addition, will make three plus operations, whereby the complemental total from register No. 2 is transferred to the No. 1 register, and the addition of said complemental value being equivalent to the subtraction of a true amount, the true vertical total of 70.00 will be subtracted from the 160.00 stored in the No. I register, leaving 90.00 remaining therein.
Also in this position of the carriage imperforate portions of tube 82 will control the feelers 83 related to the No. 3 and No. 4 registers to effect non-add operations of said registers.
Following the vertical total operation in the Checks columnar position the carriage tabulates to the Deposit columnar position where, lever 385 remaining latched in rearward set position, the normal program operation for registers No. 1 and No. 3 will be modified by cylinder 380 and again by an automatic operation of the total key 278. Thus the vertical total of 165.00 registered upon the No. 3 register will be printed and thereafter caused to be transferred additively to the 90.00 stored within the No. 1 register, all in the manner as fully described for the Old Balance transfer operation from register No. 4.
At this time imperforate portions of tube 82 will also provide non-add operation control for the No. 2 and No. 4 registers.
Upon completion of the Deposit vertical total operation the platen carriage tabulates in known manner to the New Balance columnar position, and here it will be recalled an imperforate portion of tube 82 for normal program operations provides for a non-add control of the Nos. 2, 3, 4 registers while a large diameter perforation controls an additive operation of the No. I register. it is also recalled that cam 204 engaging roller 201 acts, through lever 206 and arm 208, to release pawl 211 so that pin 68 will effect automatic operation of the total taking devices.
As above set forth the algebraic totals from registers Nos. 2, 3, 4 have been transferred upon register No. 1, and cam 204 is now utilized, in the manner hereinafter described, to automatically restore the vertical total lever 385 and parts associated therewith prior to the register selection cycle of operation in the New Balance columnar position. Thus, the registers will now be controlled for operations in the manner as described for their normal program setting and the algebraic grand total of 255.00 stored upon No. I register is cleared therefrom and printed as a New Balance vertical total.
Pivotally mounted upon the fulcrum stud 209 for lever 385 is a bell crank lever 414 the rearward arm of which engages pin 207 of the arm 206, earlier described, while an upwardly extending arm of said bell crank extends rearwardly of a stud 415 mounted in the check pawl 412 for lever 385. Upon engagement of cam 204 with roller 201, and consequent counterclockwise movement of arm 14 206, pin 207 will impart a clockwise movement to bell crank 414 and the upwardly extending arm of said bell crank contacting stud 414 lifts latch pawl 412 out of engagement with pin 385" of the vertical total lever 385, permitting said lever under influence of its spring 386 to restore automatically to normal forward position.
Upon restoration of vertical total lever 385 the spring 411 (Fig. 7) connected at one end to the slide 404 and at the opposite end to bell crank lever 399, will restore the parts 393-399 to their normal positions, and during which pin 401 of lever 399 moves from beneath surface 404" of slide 404, permitting said slide to fall so that pin 401 is again positioned in its normal setting relative to notch 402, as shown in Fig. 7.
The vertical total lever and associated parts, including the program modifying control slides 393, having thus been restored to normal, the subsequent operation of program clutch 24 by pin 23, in the manner earlier described, will not effect adjustment of the registers, including an adjustment by automatic operation of the total key 278, in accordance with that as fully described for the normal program setting relative to the New Balance columnar position.
Upon completion of a grand total operation the carriage will again return automatically to the starting position in the manner as heretofore described, and ending the operation.
It will be apparent, therefore, from the foregoing description that following a series of posting operations the operator need now merely perform a single operation and thereafter is free for other duties, while the machine automatically performs to print a vertical total for each item column of entries, and including an algebraic total of all items entered.
