Abstract

389,640. Ironing-presses. HOLTTUM, W. R., 95, Ashburnham Road, Luton. Feb. 19, 1932, No. 4985. [Class 138 (ii).] In a press particularly for ironing collars and cuffs which are placed on a support raised into pressing engagement with a stationary press head by means of a fluid-pressure operated ram, the work being placed on the support when the latter is out of alignment with the head, and wherein the support is moved manually into alignment with the head, which movement automatically renders operative the fluidpressure means, means are provided which normally obstruct the movement of the work support to the position of alignment and which must be manually removed before the support can complete such movement. The support 32, Fig. 1, is provided with a vertical pillar 24 slidable in a boss 25 formed on a plate 26 secured to the upper end of a rod 12 which is. secured at its lower end to a crank 20 rockable about a shaft 21. Arms 62, Fig. 3, are pivoted on the plate 26 and are normally drawn together at one end by a spring 65 so that when the work support is drawn forward out of alignment with the stationary head 33 these ends contact with a block 66 on the upper end of the pressure cylinder 4 and prevent the support from being moved into alignment with the head until the arms are moved apart by manipulation of handles 61 at their other ends. As the support reaches the position of alignment an abutment 11, Fig. 1, on the rod 12 opens a fluid-pressure supply valve 10 and the ram 3 raises the work support into pressing engagement with the head 33. In a modification, Fig. 4, a pin 44 is normally projected across the inner ends of the limbs of a bifurcated guide 42 in which the rod 12 works. In order that the rod 12 may complete its movement to move the work support into alignment the pin must be retracted against its spring 53 by means of a manually operated bell-crank lever 46. In both forms the outward movement of the rod 12 is cushioned by a spring-pressed pin 41.
