Abstract
445,221. Ironing-machines. BOOTH, S., New Lane Works, New Lane, Meadow Lane, Leeds. April 1, 1935, No. 10079. [Class 138 (ii)] The iron 1 or buck of an ironing-machine or press, which is raised and lowered by a treadle 5, is locked in any position wherein it contacts with the work on the support 14 by means of a fluid-pressure device 8. This comprises a piston 11 directly connected to the treadle 5 and a valve 17 which leaves its seat 16 as the piston descends but closes when the piston starts to rise and so immobilizes the latter and locks the press. To open the press a pedal 37 is depressed whereby a lever 30 carrying an adjustable stop 29 is rocked counterclockwise about its pivot 30a by the linkage 36, 34, 33. The stop 29 contacts with a valve stem 23 carrying a collar 26 and valve 22. Initial movement of the stem causes the valve 22 to uncover ports 24 in the valve 17 and further movement, when the collar contacts with the stem 18 of the valve 17, opens the latter valve fully whereby fluid passes to the reservoir 15. The lever 30 is also acted on by a spring 38 actuated by a nut 39 or another rod 32 pivoted to the treadle 5 whereby the treadle 5 and pedal 37 can be depressed simultaneously during press-closing and whereby on release of the foot from the pedal 37, the lever 30 is rocked clockwise by the spring 38 to allow the valves 17 and 22 to close for locking the press and to swing the pedal 37 into its elevated position ready for operation for press-opening.
