Abstract

445,452. Ironing presses. HANNEY, A. F., 2423, Park Avenue, Norwood, Ohio, U.S.A. July 23, 1935, No. 20967. [Class 138 (ii)] The buck 24, Fig. 1, of an ironing-press is mounted on a carriage 23 that is moved horizontally, along rails on the table to bring the buck into vertical register with the stationary head 21, by means of a fluid pressure motor 26 which subsequently raises the buck into pressing engagement with the head. The movement of the carriage is initiated by clockwise movement of a control handle 71 which rotates a cam shaft 70 so that a cam 74, Fig. 11, opens an inlet valve 44 between a fluid - pressure reservoir 50 and the cylinder 26 and also between a throttle valve 55 from the supply 49 and the cylinder 26. The piston rod 29 is connected to a yoke 30 pivoted to a cam lever 31 which acts on a bell-crank lever 37 linked to the carriage 23. As the buck arrives at the registering position a boss 40 on the yoke 30 engages beneath a pin 25 depending from the buck and slidably mounted in the buck support, and a rod 80 contacts with a plunger 81 to rock an arm 78 clockwise. The arm 78 is formed with a sleeve 761 having a cam 77 and rotatable about an eccentric 76 on the shaft 70. The engagement of the cam 77 with a lever 91 opens a valve 45 to admit an unrestricted supply of fluid-pressure from the pipe 49 to the cylinder 26 so that the buck is raised quickly into pressure engagement with the head. The opening of the valves 44 and 45 also admits fluid pressure through a restricted passage 63 to a timing cylinder 65. When the pressure in the latter builds up sufficiently the pressure passes through a pipe 66 to a plunger 67 causing the latter to slide against its spring 68 and open a valve 48 which puts the main fluid-pressure supply into direct communication with a servomotor 47 whereby the piston 82 of the latter moves to swing the cam-shaft 70 counterclockwise thereby shutting the valves 44 and 45 and opening an exhaust valve 46 which discharges to atmosphere through a muffler 61. The timing cylinder exhausts through a one way valve 65<1> leading into the pipe 58 through which the fluid-pressure was supplied to the cylinder 26 and through which it now exhausts to the muffler 61. The buck descends under gravity and a spring 41 restores the carriage to its former position for unloading and reloading the buck. The buck and head are formed with surfaces partly horizontal and partly sloping downwardly and rearwardly which tends to keep the buck and head in vertical register during vertical movement of the buck. The latter is provided with a drain conduit 103 discharging into a trough 105 extending from front to rear of the stationary frame of the machine.
