Ironing-machines with pressing action only.- In a garment press the movable member is brought into pressing position by toggle mechanism operated by a foot-lever which may then be automatically moved relatively to the toggle mechanism, and by a second depression of the foot-lever the toggle may be broken and the press opened. The movable head 7 is spring-mounted upon a lever 8 pivoted at 9 and counter-weighted at 12. A lever 17 pivoted at 20 and provided with a weight 21 is connected at 19 to a link 18 pivoted at 22 to a block 23 adjustably secured by a screwed spindle 25 to the lever 8. The two members 17, 18 constitute a toggle and are shifted to locking position by a foot-lever 32, pivoted at 34, bent upwards at 16 and carrying at its upper end a roller 36 adapted to bear upon lever 17. Excessive movement of the toggle members beyond locking position is prevented by an adjustable rod 29 terminating in a rubber tip 31 for bearing against a cross-member 4 of the standard 1. The upstanding portion of the footlever 32 is provided with a pawl 46 pivotally mounted at 44 and supported by a blade spring 18. When the press is being closed, the adjustable arm 47 of the pawl engages the projection 50 of lever 17 so causing the pawl to rock and the arm 45 to pass into the recess 51. After the press has closed and the toggle made, the foot pressure is removed so as to allow the foot-lever to rise under the action of a spring stop 37 into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2. The roller 36 is now out of engagement with the toggle lever 17 and the pawl 46 falls into the position shown with arm 45 resting upon a protuberance 49 on the weight 21 and the arm 47 engaging beneath the projection 50. If the footlever is now depressed, it acts by means of the pawl to turn the lever 17 anticlockwise so that the toggle is broken and the pressing head 7 is raised by the weight 12. Steaming-arrangements.-Steam passes to the garment upon the buck 6 when a ball valve is raised by the depression of a supplementary pedal 97. This pedal may be connected with the main foot-lever 32 by a bar 102 arranged to slide in the pedal and project beneath the tread 35. The bar can be withdrawn to allow the pedal and foot-lever to work independently.
