(Ittorneg Patented Oct. 22, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFQE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a pedal lock for pressing machines or the like, and more particularly to machines used for pressing clothes where the pressing iron is brought into contact with the article to be pressed upon the table or buck, and with suicient pressure to effect the ideal pressing state.
During the pressing operation it is very important that an even pressure be exerted and maintained for a predetermined period of time, and as the pressing operating lever is operated by the foot of the operator, it is essential that the operator be relieved from the necessity of holding down the foot lever during this interval of. time, and it is also very important that during this interval of time that the foot pedal be locked from accidental movement.
While I am aware that devices have been made for this purpose, they do not have a fine adjustment, or sure locking means that is required in actual use and I have therefore devised a construction that will include the following objects.
To provide a simple .device that may be either incorporated into the design of the machine when built, or in the form of an attachment for those now in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the adjustment of the pressure may be determined during the act of pressing.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for the quick release of. the locking means.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby a very fine adjustment of the pressure and a positive locking device for the same is provided.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed, and further illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, and it is understood that slight changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of. the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure l shows a side elevation of the device, partly in section; and showing the pedal for operating the pressing arm, and the pedal lock.
Figure 2 shows an enlarged detail top plan view of the pedal with the pedal lock and releasing lever.
Figure 3 shows an end View of the same.
Figure 4 shows an enlarged side view, partly in section, of the pedal, and locking device in a locked position.
Figure 5 is a similar view, but showing the parts in a released position, and in dotted lines,
the same parts when the pedal is raised. 5
Referring to the drawings:
The Usual presser frame sides are indicated by the numeral Ill, and to this frame is pivoted in some suitable manner the presser lever i i which is formed below its pivot point with the arm I2, 10 the forward end of which is engaged by the yoke i3 attached to a rod ill which is secured to the foot lever I5 as at I6; the foot lever I5 being pivoted at its rear end to the frame it; said foot lever I5 being normally retained in a raised pol5 sition by the spring II which is attached both to the end of the presser lever II and to the frame I 0; the forward end of. the foot lever I 5 terminating in a foot plate I8.
Near the lower part of the frame ID and ad`20 jacent to the pivot point I 6 of the foot lever I5, `are the two longitudinal brace rods I9, which have `secured thereto a transverse bar 20 in vertical alignment with the foot lever I5 and above it.
To the forward brace rod I9 by the bolts 2I is secured in a rigid manner an upright post, which is here shown as rectangular in cross-section, but which may be of any desired shape and size, and of any suitable material, either bare or 30 covered to effect a friction grip for the locking link 22.
The foot lever I5 is formed on its upper edge with a boss or ange 23 to the rear end of which is pivoted the lower end of a link 24; while to 35 the forward end of the flange 23 is pivoted as at 25 the release pedal 26, which is also formed with a foot plate 2l, a rear portion 28 and a leaf spring 29 secured to its lower face and in engagement with the foot lever I5 to retain the release lever 40 in a normally raised position.
To the rear end of the release lever pedal 26 is pivoted the lower end of a curved rod 3Q, the upper end of which is provided with the threads 3l and the adjustment nuts S2. 45
The frictiongrip link 22 is formed with the opening designed to embrace the friction locking post 33; the opening being slightly larger than the diameter of said post; while said link 22 is formed with a rear extending portion 3&3 that is pivoted 50 to the upper end of the link 2i, and a forward portion 3G that is formed with a transverse hole of slightly larger diameter than the diameter of the rod Sil which is mounted therein and allowed movement therein by the nuts 32.
Y provided with a bumper 37 for engagement with It will thus be seen that the friction link 22 is mounted on the link 24 and the rod 3E) and has a sliding movement up and down on the rod or post 33; the edges of the inner ends of said Ylink 22 being rounded as indicated to effect a rictionhold Vupon the post 33 when the link is inclined or tilted, but being free'v to move upon the post whenV thelink 22 is moved into a position more at right angles to the post. Y
To the rear of the flange 23 the foot lever is an adjustable stop 38 mounted in the transverse bar 253 :for limiting the upward movement of the Yfoot lever i5. Y
In the operation of the'device, downward pressure being placed on the foot plate I8 of the foot lever I5, said foot lever VI will be moved downward, and with it the'rod I4 operating the lever I I-I2 and the press arm pressing iron, while at V,the same time the link 24 will carry the friction link 22 downward uponV the friction gripping post 33; the position ofV thecurvedirod 3D remaining the same owing to the spring 29 which Vis between the foot lever l5 and the release lever 26.
Upon the instant that the foot pressure is removed, the slightest upward movement of the foot lever I5, dueto the action of the spring I'I will tilt the link 22, causing its edges to grip the sides of the post 33 and .prevent any further upward movement of the foot lever l5 with respect to the frame. i
To releasev the lock, a slight pressure of the operators toe upon the release foot plate 21 will cause the release lever Y26 to move upward at its i rear end raising the rod 3i) and the forward end 1. In a pedal lock for pressing machines, the combination with a frame and a pressing arm having a foot operated lever, of aV frictional looking member mounted on said frame, agripping vlink coacting with said locking member, supporting 5 member rigidly mounted on said frame, a fric- `V tional gripping link adjustably mounted on said locking member, means pivoted to said operating lever and adjustably attached to said gripping link for moving the same on said locking member, a releasing means pivoted on said l0 operating lever, and a link attached to said releasing means and to said frictional gripping link for disengaging its frictional grip upon said lock- Y ing member. i
3. In a pedal lock for pressing machines,` and in combination with the machine frame and its i presser arm, of a foot operated presser arm lever pivoted to said frame and having an upper' flange formed thereon, an upright locking post secured to said frame above vsaid'foot lever, a 30 foot operated release pedal pivoted to the flange on said toot lever and normally held in a raised position, a frictional gripping link'mountedV on said locking post, a link pivoted to said flange and to said grippingV link for Vsupporting said35 gripping link and adjusting the same on said lockingV pos'uand a rod pivoted to said release pedal and to said gripping link for supporting the same and by the depression of the release pedal breaking the frictional grip between the 40 gripping link and the locking post.
