Be it known that I, Janus D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orland, in the county of Glenn and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheet Stands, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in stands employed in holding a wheel while resetting or removing a tire; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this general character, of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a compact and durable construction, so arranged that a wheel can be conveniently and accurately adjusted in position upon the stand in a manner insuring the wheel beinpgfirmly but detachably held during the operation of resetting or removing a tire.
With these and other objects in View the present invention consists in the combina tion and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claims, it being further understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1, shows a perspective view of a wheel stand embodying my invention. Fig. 2, shows a central sectional view of the stand disclosing a wheel in position. Fig. 3, is an enlarged detached detail of the flange plate as used in my invention.
In carrying out the object of my invention I employ an apertured bed plate A, having the annular upstanding grooved flange D, arranged to receive a suitable buffer B, shown in Fig. l, and in cross section in Fig. 2. As shown, this bed plate is square and has a circumscribing border flange A, and secured to the flange A, of this plate are the supporting legs B. Depending from the flange A of the bed plate is a bracket 1, made of strap metal having a straight base portion 1, this straight base portion giving support to the two upstanding guide rods 0, held in parallel spaced relation. The bracket is centrally held below the plate aperture and is provided with a pin opening and a bar opening located between the guide rods 0. The guide rods 0, are held in position by means of the nuts 2, the upper ends of the rods being provided with the stop nuts 3. Surrounding these guide rods 0, are the springs e, and slidably held upon these guide rods is a slotted plate 5, the slot 8 of which, shown in Fig. 2, be ing surrounded upon three sides by a flange (Z. Near each end this plate 5, has the rod openings at, so that this plate may be slidably held upon the guide rods 0, and rest upon the springs c, which normally tend to force this plate 5 upward, into contact with the stop nuts 3, in the manner disclosed in Fig. 2. Pivotally held between the flanges (Z, as shown in Fig. 3, is the pin 5, giving support to the link 72., which at its upper end carries the pin 6.
Slidably held in an opening in the bracket base 1 is the bar f, having its lower end th *eaded and above being provided with the gripper head 9, having the sharp edged beak 10 and the slot 7, shown in Fig. 3. The slot 7 of the gripper head is arranged to receive the link 71, and is provided with openings accommodating the pin 6, so that the link It is pivotally secured to the gripper head. This gripper head is permitted an up and down movement, as well as a lateral movement, between the flanges (Z.
Interposed between the head 9 and the bracket portion 1, is the spring 1%, normally forcing the gripper head 9 upward.
Adj u stably secured to the lower threaded end of the bar f, is the slotted block 1', which carries the pin 12, giving pivotal support to the foot lever J, and at its rear end this foot lever carries the pin 15, giving pivotal support to the hook K, which is arranged to be brought into engagement with an eye L. This eye L, is preferably secured to the floor or suitably embedded within the earth at a point below the bracket, as shown in Figs, 1 and 2.
One of the legs is provided with a rack edge a, and a guard rod 0, the lever J, having an outstanding lip 13, arranged for coaction with the rack edge u, so that this lever may be detach-ably secured in position.
In connection with my wheel stand, I em ploy a pin E, having the upper terminal eye 1 1, this pin giving support to the disk F, as shown in Fig. 2.
The operation of securing a wheel, as the one marked 00, in Fig. 2, to the stand is very simple. The wheel is placed upon the butter ring B, when the pin E, is passed through the hub, the slot 8, and the pin opening within the bracket portion 1, in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The operator then forces the lever J, downward resulting in the beak 10 biting into the pin E, to force the pin against the end of the flange (Z. The beak 10, finally securely bites into the rod E, in which position the lever J, is brought into engagement with one of the rack teeth. a, to firmly lock the wheel to the stand. The downward movement of the gripper head 9, is permitted by means of the springs e and m. In releasing the lever the springs 6, again promptly force the slotted plate 5 upward, while the spring m, forces the gripper head and connected lever J upward.
A wheel stand constructed according to my invention is simple and inexpensive and both durable and eflicient in operation, and the wheel can be adjustably secured to the bed plate with ease, accuracy and despatch.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with an apertured bed plate, of legs supporting said plate, a bracket depending from said plate and held centrally below the same, two upstanding guide rods extending from said bracket and held in parallel spaced relation, a spring surrounding each guide rod said bracket having a bar opening located between said rods, a slotted plate having an upstanding flange surrounding its slot said plate being slidably held by said rods and resting upon said springs, nuts secured to the upper ends of said rods to limit the upward movement of said slotted plate, a link pivotally held between said flange, a threaded bar slidably held within said plate opening and having a gripper head pivotally secured to said link said head having a sharp edged beak, a spring surrounding said bar to normally t'orce said head upward, a slotted block hav ing a threaded opening for co-action with said threaded bar, a foot lever pivotally held within said slotted block, a hook secured to one end of said lever, a suitably secured eye engaged by said hook, and a wheel holding member engageable by the beak of the gripper head.

I11 a device of the character described, the combination with an apertured bed plate, of legs supporting said plate, a bracket de pending from said plate and held centrally below the same, two upstanding guide rods extending from said bracket and held in parallel spaced relation, a spring surrounding each guide rod, said bracket having a pin opening and a bar opening located between said rods, a slotted plate having an upstanding flange surrounding its slot, said slotted plate being slidably guided upon said rods and held upon said springs, nuts secured to the upper ends of said rods to limit the upward movement of the slotted plate, a link pivotally held between said flange, a threaded bar slidably held within said plate opening and having a gripper head pivotally secured to said link, said head having a sharp edged beak, a spring surrounding said bar to normally force said head upward, a slotted block having a threaded opening for co-action with said threaded bar, a foot-lever pivotally held within said slotted block, a hook secured to one end of said lever, a suitably secured eye engaged by said hook, and a pin passing through said pin opening and slot arranged to be engaged by the beak of said gripper head.
3. A wheel stand comprising a bed plate, a gripper head movable laterally and in the direction of its length, a slidable support for the gripper head, guides for the support, a support for the guides, an oblique link connection between the gripper head and the slidable support for thrusting the gripper head laterally when it is moved in the direction of its length, operating means connected to the gripper head, and a wheel holding member engageable by the gripper head.
4. A wheel stand comprising a bed plate, a bracket depending from the bed plate. guide rods carried by the bracket, a slotted plate slidably mounted on the guide rods and spring supported, a gripper head movable laterally and in the direction of its length in the slot of the plate, an oblique link connection between the gripper head and the plate for thrusting the said head laterally when it is moved in the direction of its length, operating means connected to the gripper head, and a wheel holding member engageable by the gripper head.
