UNITE TATE PATENT @FFIQCE.
JACOB M. STEIN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PRESSER-FORM.
Application filed November 29, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB Mosns STEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser-Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shoulder pressing device for garments.
In the pressing of garments, it has been difficult to press the shoulders of coats expeditiously and satisfactorily. The shoulders of coats are usually pressed upon the wellknown bosom or presser blocks which tend to defeat rather than accomplish the object in view. In the use of this old type of block, the shoulder of the garment is placed upon the narrower end of the pressing surface thereof. A. damp cloth is then placed over the shoulder and a hot iron passed over the damp cloth to steam the cloth of the garment so that the latter may be stretched. This stretching of the material of the garment is usually accomplished by grasping the material upon opposite sides of the block and stretching the same by hand over the latter. The stretching is done alternately with the application. of the hot iron. he ordinary bosom or presser boards present a flat upper surface and when the steamed material of the goods is stretched thereover it tends to flatten or broaden the shoulders from front to rear in direct contradistinction to a narrowing and raising of the shoulders. To effect a proper or high shouldered garment it is essential that the shoulder be raised and narrowed from front to rear. An expert presser, regardless of the time he may con sume, cannot possibly shape the opposite shoulders alike with the use of the ordinary "bosom or presser board or block, one side almost invariably being lower than the other, and surely so when considerable time and. patience are not manifested in the work. The fact of the matter is that the workman is compelled to guess whether he has shaped both shoulders alike. The workman is also hindered in his work in that he must continually shift the garment from one position to another upon the old type of block. In tailoring establishments time is obviously at a premium and it is requisite to the best interests of the establishment that the garments be not only expeditiously but satisfactorily pressed to give the garment the proper shape or effect.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Serial No. 404,404.
In the use of my improved shoulder presser form, both shoulders are raised to the same degree and shaped alike, without shifting the garment from one position to another upon the form.
Another object of my invention is to provide a shoulder presser form embodying such characteristics that incident to the alternate steaming and stretching of the goods, the material thereof at the shoulders will be lifted upwardly and narrowed instead of flattened from front to rear to present high square shoulders upon each side of the garment.
Another object of the invention is to in sure the proper shaping of each shoulder in the quickest possible time without the continual movement of the garment to different positions upon the presser form, the form in the present instance itself providing the necessary shape and obviating the necessity of shifting the garment from one position to another during the pressing operation.
It is still a further object of my invention to provide a pivoted presser block constructed and arranged for detachable engagement with the ordinary bosom or presser form or any other support.
It is still further designed to provide a shoulder presser form embodying such characteristics that it may be rocked for the purpose of stretching the goods during the pressing operation, obviating the necessity of the expert presser using both hands to stretch the material over opposite sides of the form as is necessary in the use of the old type of ironing block or board.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of my invention, illustrating in full lines the initial position of the form and in dotted lines the operating position, a portion of a garment also being shown. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a face view of the plate for the support of the garment holding fingers. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention. Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 8 is a detailed perspective view of the preferred form of arm-pit engaging means. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the invention illustrating a modified form of arm-pit engaging means. Fig. 10 is a face view of the plate fitted over the inner end of the form and which covers the transverse groove in the forward end of the form.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 indicates an ordinary bosom or presser block to which my improved presser form is detachably secured by means of a suitable clamping bracket 2 designed to embrace the narrower end 3 of the pressing surface of the old type of block 1.
The character 4 indicates my improved presser form, and 5 one form of arm-pit engaging means, the presser block having its bottom inclined from an intermediate point toward one end and at such intermediate point there being provided spaced recesses 6 designed to receive the spaced perforated ears 7 formed at the top of the aforesaid bracket 2, which ears are designed to receive the pivot bolt 8 passed transversely through the form 4 whereby the latter may have pivotal movement for a purpose hereinafter explained.
To secure the bracket 2 and consequently the form 4, upon the ordinary bosom or presser board. or other support against accidental displacement, I provide the bottom of the bracket 2 with a screw-threaded perforation in which works a thumb screw 9 whose shank portion is designed to engage the lower face of the part 3 of the ordinary presser board, as shown. This thumb screw 9 has a thumb nut 10 working upon it for the purpose of clamping between it and the lower face of the bracket 2, the arm-pit engaging member 11, illustrated in Fig. 9.
One end of my improved presser form is shaped to fit the shoulder portion of the garment as indicated at 12, and the other end 13 of the presser form is shaped to fit the collar of the garment, the front, top and back of the form between the collar and shoulder portions 12 and 13 respectively, being concaved and merged into said end portions. The inner end of the presser form is provided with a curved handle 14 through the instrumentality of which the presser form may be rocked upon its pivot 8 to stretch the mate rial during the pressing operation. However, this curved handle member 14 is not absolutely necessary in the use of my invention, for in this p articular embodiment of my invention I provide for its use without the employment of a handle, as will be hereinafter fully explained. The presser form is preferably covered by fabric or other suitable material 15.
The bracket 2, in addition to having the spaced perforated ears 7, has an rip-standing segment 16 arranged between the ears for disposition in the elongated recess 17 between the aforesaid recesses 6, and which opens through the collar end 13 of the form 4. The aforesaid pivot bolt 8 passes through this segment plate 16 and the latter has its teeth 18' arranged for engagement by the inner end of the pivoted dog 19 which lies in the elongated recess 17 and extends slightly beyond the inner or the collar end of the form 4 through the slot 37 of the plate 37 so that it may be moved upon its pivot 20 out of engagement with said teeth 18 to permit of a return. movement of the form to its normal position, the dog carrying a spring 21 for engagement with the aforesaid curved handle member 14 to hold the dog normally in engagement with the teeth of the segment plate 16. If the handle 14 is not used a plate 14 may be fitted to the bottom of the form 4 over said elongated recess 17 for engagement by said spring 21 of the dog 19. Thus the form 4 may have a step by step movement in the stretching of the garment during the pressing operation, incident to engagement of the dog 19 with the teeth of the segment plate 16, the step by step movement being accomplished by ones hand engaging the handle member 14, but preferably by the iron held in one hand of the operator to give the latter the free use of his other hand. The dog 19 prevents accidental backward movement of the form 4.
The arm-pit engaging means 5 consists of an arm 22 having its inner end secured between the lower portion of the ordinary presser board and the plate 23 secured to the latter, said arm having an up-standing portion 24 and an inwardly directed. portion 25 terminating in a clamping member 25 for coiiperation with the clamping member 26 on the inner end of the operating lever 27, which latter is pivoted to the part 25 ofthe arm pit engaging means 5, said operating lever 27 having spaced ears 28 for the pivotal reception of the dog 29 whose inner end engages the teeth 30 of a plate 31 mounted upon the part 25 of the arm-it engaging member 5. The dog 29 serves to ock the garment clamping members tightly in engagement with the garment. A spring 32 has engagement with the locking dog 29 to hold the latter against accidental disengagement with the teeth 30, and against the tension of which spring the locking dog maybe operated to throw the clamping members 26 and 25 out of cooperation. These clamping members 26 and 25 are designed to engage and clamp the material of the garment upon the outside of the latter at or immediately beneath the arm-pit of the garment to hold the latter firmly during the operation of the form 4 in the stretching operation. Said clamping members end thereof to engage the armit of the garment to effect a stretching of the garment when the form is moved upon its pivot, and means constructed and arranged at the collar end of the form for engagement with the collar of the garment to hold the garment against displacement upon the form during the stretching operation.
3. The combination with a presse form, of means constructed and arranged to pivotally mount the form and permit of its pivotal movement in one direction when. pressure is applied thereto, means cooperating with the form to effect a stretching of the garment during said pivotal movement of the form, and fingers pivotally carried by the form for engagement with the garnient to hold the latter in place upon the form during said stretching operation.
4. The combination with a support; of a bracket secured to the support and provided with spaced up-standing ears; a presser form having spaced recesses in its bottom to receive said ears; a pivot pin passed transversely through the presser form whereby the latter is pivotally mounted upon the bracket; an arm-pit engaging means arranged to cooperate with the form; and garment engaging fingers operating independently o1 the arm-pit engaging means to hold the garment upon the form during the stretching of the garment between the form and armpit engaging means during movement of the form upon its pivot.
5. The combination with a support; of a bracket secured to the support and provided with spaced upstanding cars; a presser form having spaced recesses in its bottom to receive said ears; a pivot pin passed transversely through the presser form whereby the latter is pivotally mounted upon the bracket; an arm-pit engaging means; and garment holding means carried by the form to hold the garment upon the latter during pivotal movement of the form.
6. The combination with a presser form, of means constructed and arranged to pivotally mount the form and permit of its pivotal movement in one direction when pressure is applied thereto, means cooperating with the form to efiect a stretching of the garment during said pivotal movement of the form, spring controlled fingers pivotally carried by the form for engagement with the garment to hold the latter in place upon the form during said stretching operation, and locking means to hold said fingers against the action of their spring.
7. In a shoulder pressing device, a presser form, means constructed and arranged to mount the form for a step by step pivotal movement in one direction when pressure is applied thereto, means constructed and arranged to engage the garment at one of its arm-pits to effect a stretching of one of the shoulders of the garment during the step by step movement of the form, and fingers constructed and arranged to engage the collar of the garment to prevent displacement of the latter from the form when the form is moved during said stretching operation.
8. The combination with a support, of a bracket engaging the support, a presser form pivotally mounted upon the bracket, means constructed and arranged for engagement with the arm-pit oi the garment to hold the latter when the form is moved in one direction upon its pivot to effect a stretching of the shoulder of the garment, means whereby the presser form may be moved step by step upon its pivot during the stretching of the shoulder of the garment, and other means constructed and arranged independently of said arm-pit engaging means to engage the collar portion of the garment to prevent sliding displacement of the latter from the form while the shoulder portion of the garment is being stretched.
9. In a shoulder pressing device, a presser form, means constructed and arranged to mount the form for a step by step pivotal movement in one direction when pressure is applied thereto, means constructed and arranged for engagement with the garment to hold the latter and effect a stretching of the shoulder of the garment during the step by step movement 01' the form, and spring controlled fingers constructed and arranged upon opposite sides of the "form for engagement with the collar portion of the garment to hold the collar portion of the garment and consequently the shoulder portion thereof against displacement from the form during said stretching operation.
10. The combination with a presser form, of means for pivotally mounting the form intermediate its ends for an alternate raising and lowering of its ends, means arranged for cooperation with the form to stretch the garment between the form and said means, and means for holding the garment up on the form during the stretching operation.
11. The combination with a presser form, of spring controlled fingers carried by the form for engagement with the garment to hold the latter in place upon the form.
12. The combination with a presser form, of fingers pivotally mounted and adapted "for engagement with the garment to hold the latter in place upon the form, a spring having connection with said. fingers to hold the same normally in operative position, and a locking means between the fingers to hold the latter in inoperative position against the tension of the aforesaid spring.
13. The combination with a pivoted presser form for garments having a groove in one end; of a plate fitted over the groove and provided with inwardly directed lugs and also provided with outwardly directed ears preferably carrying rubber or other material a to prevent friction between the same and the garment.
In order that the garment, and especially the collar portion thereof may remain in one position upon the form 4 during the stretching operation, I provide a pair of collar or garment engaging fingers 34. These fingers 34 are each provided with an inwardly directed, perforated lug 35 for pivotal mounting upon the lugs 36 of the plate 37, which plate is secured by screws or other suitable fastenings 38 to the inner or collar end of the form 4, it being seen that the lugs 36 are formed one at each end of said plate '37. This plate 37 has a lug secured to its rear face in any suitable manner and provided with the ears 38 intermediate its ends which project into the transverse groove 33 of the form 4 and which ears are beveled in opposite directions to accommodate between them the corresponding intermediate coil of the transversely disposed helical spring 39 disposed in said groove 33 which has its ends secured in the eyes 49 in the ends of the inwardly directed lugs 50 of the aforesaid fingers 34. When the fingers 34 are rocked away from the form the spring 39 is placed under tension so that when the locking means of said fingers is unfastened, the spring will quickly return the fingers into operative rclation with the form to hold the garment against movement during the stretching operation. Thus it will be understood that the fingers 34 have a tendency to move toward each other at their inner ends by virtue of the spring 39, and in order to hold said fingers out of their normal positions or away from the form 4, I bifurcate one of the arms 34 at its outer end to provide spaced ears 5]. (see Fig. 1) for the reception of the inner end of the locking arm 52 whose inner end is provided with an extension 53 for engagement with the flat spring 54 secured at one of its ends to one of said arms 34 so that the locking arm 52 may always be in position to present its hooked outer end 55 in the opening 56 of the opposite arm 34, as best seen in Fig. 5. I
In Fig. 9 it will be seen that the arm-pit engaging member 11 instead of engaging the outside of the garment is designed to engage the inside thereof, said arm-pit member 11 being provided with a slot whereby it may slide into and out of position upon the shank of the thumb screw 9 or be adjusted thereupon. This arm-pit engaging member 11 forms part of the subject matter of my copending application, Ser. No. 375,255, filed,
flay 23,1907.
In the use of my invention, and especially in connection. with the preferred form there of, the coat sleeve at the shoulder is placed upon the form 4 near the shoulder end of the latter when it is in its lowermost position,
such lowermost position being indicated in full lines in Fig. 1. The armit engaging means 5 is then brought into 0 amping engagement with the garment at or beneath the arm-pit upon the outside of the garment. Either before or after the engagement with the garment, as may be preferred, the garment engaging fingers 34 are released so that they may engage the collar portion of the garment. Either before or after the fingers 34 move into operative position a damp cloth is placed over the shoulder part of the garment and a hot iron applied to steam the material of the coat and press the latter. The coat being steamed facilitates the stretching thereof and this stretching of the goods is essential to the proper shaping of the garment. The pressing workman, as he presses the garment with the iron in his right hand, may use his left hand to engage either the handle 14 or the inner or collar end of the form to depress the latter at its inner end to raise the outer or shoulder end of the form.
In the use of my invention, it is most necessary that the operator hold the iron in one hand and with the other hand move the presser form upon its pivot. On the contrary, the operator may shift the form in this manner or he may hold the iron in one hand and by pressing the iron with a certain force upon the inner end of the form, the latter may be moved upon its pivot. In other words, the operator may press the garment and during the pressing thereof move the form for stretching purposes without using his other hand, there being means provided to prevent backward movement of the form during the ironing and stretching operations, and yet permit of the forward pivotal or step by step movement of the form to effect the stretching of the garment during the ironing thereof.
What is claimed is 1. In a coat shoulder pressing device, the combination with a pivoted form, of means cooperating with the form to stretch the shoulder portion of the coat when the form is moved upon its pivot, and other means constructed and arranged independently of the aforesaid means to engage the collar portion of the coat and hold the latter against displacement from the form while the shoulder portion of the coat is being stretched.
