To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB 'Mosns STEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoulder-Pressing Devices for Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shoulder pressing device for garments.
In the pressing of garments, it has been difficult to press the shoulders of coats expeditiously and satisfactorily. The shoulders of coats are usually pressed upon the wellknown bosom or presser blocks which tend to defeat rather than accomplish the object in view. In the use of this old type of block, the shoulder of the garment is placed up on the narrower end of the pressing surface thereof. A damp cloth is then placed over the shoulder and a hot iron passed over the dam cloth to steam the cloth of the garment I so that the latter may be stretched. This stretching of the material of tl' e garment is usually accomplished by grasping the material 5 upon opposite sides of the block and stretching the same by hand over the latter. The stretching is done alternately with the application of the hot iron. The ordinary bosom or presser boards present a flat upper surface and when the steamed material of the goods is stretched thereover it tends to fiatten or broaden the shoulders from front to rear in direct contradistinction to a narrowing and raising of the shoulder. To effect a proper or high shouldered garment it is essential that the shoulder be raised and narrowed from front to rear. An expert presser, regardless of the time he may consume, cannot possibly shape the opposite shoulders alike with the use of the ordinary bosom or presser block, one side almost invariably being lower than the other, and surely so, when considerable time and patience is not manifested in the .work. The fact of the matter is that the workman is compelled to guess whether he has shaped both shoulders alike. The workman is also hindered in his work in that he must continually shift the garment from one position to another upon the old type of block. In tailoring establishments time is obviously at a premium and it is requisite to the best interests of the establishment that the garments be not only expeditiously but satisfactorily pressed to give the garment the proper shape or efiect.
I In the use of my improved shoulder presserform, both shoulders are raised to the same degree and shaped alike, without any particular attention being given the work, and without shifting the garment from one position to another upon the form.
Another object of my invention is to provide a shoulder presser form embodying such characteristics that incident to the alternate steaming and stretching of the goods, the materialthereof at the shoulder will be lifted upwardly instead of flattened from front to rear to present high, square shoulders upon each side of the garment.
Another object of the invention is to insure the proper shaping of each shoulder in the quickest possible time without the continual movement of the garment to different positions upon the presser form, the form in the present instance itself providing the necessary shape and obviating the necessity of shifting the garment from one position to another during the pressing operation.
It is a still further object of my invention l to provide a pivoted presser block construct ed and arranged for detachable engagement with the ordinary bosom or presser form or any other support.
It is still further designed to provide a shoulder presser form embodying such characteristics that it may be rocked for the purpose of stretching the goods during the pressing operation, obviating the necessity of the expert presser using both hands to stretch the material over opposite sides of the form as is necessary in the use of the old type of ironing block or board.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in theaccompanying drawings and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, the reference character 1 indicates an ordinary bosom or presser block to which my improved presser form is detachably secured by means of a suitable bracket 2 designed to embrace the narrower end 3 of the pressing surface of the old type of block 1.
The main features of the present invention reside in the presser form 4 and the arm pit engaging member 5, the presser block having its bottom inclined from an intermediate point toward one end and at such intermediate point being provided with a pair of spaced recesses 6 designed to receive the spaced perforated ears 7 formed at the top of the aforesaid bracket 2, which ears are designed to receive the pivot bolt 8 passed transversely through the form 4 whereby the latter may have pivotal movement for a purpose hereinafter explained.
To secure the bracket 2, and consequently the form 4, upon the ordinary bosom or presser board or other support against accidental displacement, I provide the bottom of the bracket 2 with a screw threaded perforation in which works a thumb screw 9 whose shank portion is designed to engage the under face of the part 3 of the ordinary presser board, as shown. This thumb screw 9 has the further function of securing the arm pit engaging member 5 firmly to the bracket 2, the arm pit engaging member 5 being curved and provided at its inner end with a comparatively elongated slot 10 designed to embrace the shank of the thumb screw 9, whereby the arm pit engaging member may be adjustably secured against the under face of the bracket 2 by means of the thumb nut 11. The arm pit member is curved and adjustable to accommodate different sized arm-holes.
The outer end of the arm pit engaging member 5 is broader than its inner end and flared upwardly upon opposite sides as indicated at 12 with its extreme outer end, including its flared portions 12, flared downwardly to form a 11p 13.
One end of my im roved presser form is shaped to fit the shou der portion of the garment, as indicated at 14, and the other end 15 of the presser form is shaped to fit the collar of the garment, the front, top and back of the form between the collar and shoulder portions 14. and 15, respectively, being concaved and merged into said end portions.
The form decreases gradually in cross sectional diameter from the shoulder end to the collar end thereof to provide a pronounced shoulder end to the form. The inner end of the resser form is provided with a curved handle member 16 through the instrumentality of which the presser form may be rocked by hand or foot upon its pivot to stretch the material during the pressing operation. The presser form is preferably covered or padded by means of fabric or other suitable material 17 without altering the general shape of the form. r r
In the use of my present invention, the coat sleeve at the shoulder is placed upon the form 4 and the arm pit engaging member 5 adjusted to engage the inner end of the sleeve at the seam between the sleeve and shoulder of the garment. then placed over the shoulder part ofthe garment and a hot iron applied to steam the ma terial of the coat. The coat being steamed facilitates stretching thereof and this stretching of the goods is essential to the proper shaping of the shoulder. The pressing WOT kn man grasps the handle .16 with his left hand and in his right hand holds the iron. As he presses the garment Withhis right hand he presses down with his left hand upon the handle 16 gradually to raise the shoulder of the garment during the pressing operation, the arm pit engaging member cooperating in this stretching and raising of the shoulder. When it is desired to remove the garment from the presser form it is simply necessary to rock the form upon its pivot to bring the shoulder part of the form toward the arm pit engaging member, whereby the coat may be readily removed after it has been accurately and properly pressed into shape without the attending guess work manifested in the use of tllie old and well-known type'of ironing bloc c. 7
A damp cloth is I In Figs. 6 to 8, inclusive, I illustrate a 7 modified form of invention, in which the general shape of form 4 is the same as that hereinbefore described, and in which the form is secured u on the ordinary bosom? or presser orms in the same manner as heretofore explained. In this instance, however, the bracket, in addition to having the spaced perforated ears 7 and thetransverse pivot bolt 8, has an upstanding se ment 18 be tween the ears for disposition in the elongated recess 19 between the recesses 6, and which opens through the inner or collar end 15 of the form 4. The said pivot bolt 8 asses through the segment plate 18 and the atter has its teeth 20 arranged for engagement by the inner end of the pivoted dog 21 which lies in the elongated recess 19 and extends slightly beyond the inner or collar end of the form 4 so that it may be moved upon its pivot pin 22 out of engagement with said teeth 20, the dog carrying a spring 23 for en gagement with the curved plate 24 to hold the dog normally in engagement with the teeth of the segment plate 18. This modified form has an arm-pit engaging member 5 associated therewith, as in the first form described.
In the use of this second embodiment of the invention, the handle 16 of the first embodiment is obviated. The workman simply presses down upon the inner or collar end of the form 4 gradually, or upon the curved plate 24, which may therefore serve as a handle, to cause a step by step lifting of the shoulder end of the form 4 to properly raise the shoulder of the garment. In the first form this step by step movement is manifest but the workman has to keep his hand upon the handle 16, while in the second embodiment of the invention the dog 2]. holds the presser form in its different positions. This dog 21. prevents backward movement of the presser lorm until disengaged by the workman from the segment plate 18.
If desired, the aforesaid curved plate 24 may have an eye 25 in its outer end 'for the reception of thepart 26 of the extension toot lever rod and which is clamped to the other part 27 of the latter by means of a clamp 28. The lower end of the part 27 of the extension rod is secured in the eye 29 of the treadle 30. The rod is adjusted so as to hold the treadle upon a slight incline so that a slight pressure thereupon by the foot of the workman will obtain the step by step pivotal movement of the form 4. Thus the form 4 may be rocked by hand or foot or both as may be preferred.
In Figs. 9, 10 and 11 there is shown a third form of the invention in which the shoulder presser 'l'orm 4 is the same as the iOI'IIl 4, including the form 4, spaced. ears 6, segment plate 20 and dog 21. However, the bracket 2 has secured thereto at one end a curved arm 31 which is twisted at 32 to dispose its extremity 33 at an angle to its body portion. A pair of pincer arms 34 are pivoted together through a perforation in the extremity 33 by means of a pivot bolt 34. -he inner ends of the pincer arms 34 are adapted to grasp the arm pit of the coat near the seam between the shoulder and sleeve under the armhole upon the outside oi the garment by means of the spring controlled latch 35,

Either the arm pit engaging member or the pincers may be properly termed means for holding the coat during operation of the pivoted presser form.
W hat is claimed is 1. In a shoulder pressing device, the combination with a pivoted presser form having its inner end terminating in a flaring portion to provide a collar ironing surface and having its outer end terminating in a shoulder ironing surface, the portion of the form between the collar and shoulder ends having its top concaved to correspond with the depressions in the garment between the collar and shoulder of the garment, and means constructed and arranged to engage the garment to ell'ect a stretching of the latter between the form and said means when the form is moved in one direction upon its pivot.
2. In a shoulder pressing device, the combination with a pivoted presser form having its inner end terminating in a flaring portion to provide a collar ironing surface and having its outer end terminating in a shoulder ironing surface, the portion of the form between the collar and shoulder ends having its top 3 coneaved to correspond with the depressions in the garment between the collar and shoulder of the garment, means constructed and arranged to engage the garment to effect a stretching of the latter between the form and said means when the form is moved in one direction upon its pivot, and means constructed and arranged to prevent accidental backward movement of the form during the stretching operation.
3. In a shoulder pressing device, a form, means constructed and arranged. to pivotally mount the form to permit of an alternate raising and lowering of the ends thereof, and means constructed and confined within the form to prevent accidental backward movement of the latter during its pivotal movement in one direction.

In a shoulder pressing device, the combination with a presser form, of means constructed and arranged to pivotally mount the form intermediate its ends to permit of an alternate raising and lowering of the ends, an arm-pit engaging member arranged in spaced relation to the form to effect a stretching of the garment between one end of the form and said member when one end of the form is raised, and a handle member carried by the form.
7. The combination with a support, of a bracket engaging the support; a presser form pivotally mounted upon the bracket;
an arm-pit engaging member arranged against the bracket, a member passed through the arm-pit engaging member and the bracket to secure the latter upon said support; means embracing the member passed .through the bracket to secure the arm-pit engaging member against displace ment; and means whereby the presser form may be rocked upon its pivot to stretch the material between the form and the arm-pit engaging member.
8. The combination with a presser form, of means constructed and arranged to pivot? ally mount the form intermediate its ends to permit of an alternate raising and lowering of the ends, and an ar1n-pit engaging means cooperating with the form to effect a stretching of the garment when one end of the form is raised.
9. The combination with. a presser form, of means constructed and arranged to pivotally mount the form intermediate its ends to permit of an alternate raising and lowering of the ends, and an arm-pit engaging member adapted to engage the garment to effect a stretching of the latter between the form and said member when one end of the form is raised, said member being slidably and adjustably mounted.
10. In a shoulder pressing device, the combination with a form having its inner end terminating in a flaring portion to provide a collar ironing surface and having its outer end terminating in a shoulder ironing surface, the portion of the form between the collar and shoulder ends having its top concaved to correspond with. the depression in the garment between the collar and shoulder of the garment, of means constructed and arranged to pivotally mount the form intermediate its ends to permit of an alternate collar and shoulder ends having its top concaved to correspond with the depression in the garment between the collar and shoulder of the garment, of means constructed and arranged to pivotally mount theform intermediate its ends to permit of an alternate raising and lowering of the ends, an arm-pit engaging member to engage the garment to effect a stretching of the latter when the form is moved in one direction upon its pivot, means for clamping the arm-pit engaging member in adjusted position, and means for preventing accidental backward movement of the form during said stretching operation.
12. The combination with a pivoted presser form for garments having one end shaped to fit the shoulder, ortion thereof and the other end shaped o fit-the collar portion of the garment; and a curved armpit engaging member cooperating with said pivoted form, the outer end of the arm-pit engaging member being broadened and curved upwardly at its sides with its extremity including the upwardly curved portions, formed to provide a semi-circular lip.
13. The combination with a support; of a bracket secured to the support and provided with spaced upstanding ears, and a toothed segment plate arranged between the ears; a presser form having spaced recesses in its bottom to receive said ears and said toothed segment plate, a pivot pin passed transversely through the presser form and through the ears and segment plate, anv arm pit engaging member arranged beneath said form and held in adjusted positions against the bracket; and a spring actuated dog arranged in one of the aforesaid recesses for engagement with the teeth of the segment plate to prevent backward movement of the presser form when the latter is moved in one direction upon its pivot.
14:. The combination with a support; of a presser form detachably mounted upon the support; an arm-pit engaging member arranged beneath the form; and a handle member carried by the presser form whereby the latter may be rocked upon its pivot to stretch the garment between the form and the arm-pit engaging member.
15. The combination With a support; of a presser form detachably mounted upon the support; an arm-pit engaging member arranged beneath the form; a handle member carried by the form; a treadle, and an adjustable connection between the treadle and handle member.
16. The combination with a support; of a bracket secured to the support and provided with spaced upstanding ears and a toothed segment plate between the cars; a presser for 1 having spaced recesses in its bottom to receive said ears and toothed segment plate; a pivot pin passedtransversely through the presser form whereby the latter is pivotally mounted upon the bracket; a curved handle member carried by the presser form and bridging one of said recesses; and a pivoted spring actuated dog arranged within one of the recesses and normally in engagement with the teeth. of the segment plate, the dog projecting slightly beyond one end of the presser form.
17. The combination with a presser form, of means constructed and arranged to pivotally mount the form intermediate its ends and permit of a step by step pivotal movement of the form, means cooperating with the form to engage the aim-pit of the garment to effect a stretching of the shoulder portion only of the garment when one end of the form is raised upon its pivot, and means constructed and arranged to prevent accidental backward movement of the form during the stretching operation.
18. The combination with a support, of a shoulder presser form pivotally mounted upon the support, and a curved. slotted arm pit engaging member arranged to engage the garment during pivotal movement of said form.
19. The combination with a bracket provided with spaced ears, of a presser form having spaced recesses to receive said ears, and a pivot pin passed through the presser form and said ears whereby the form may have pivotal movement upon the bracket.
20. The combination with an attaching means provided with spaced ears, of a presser form having spaced recesses to receive said ears, a pivot pin passed through the presser form and said ears, whereby the form may be pivotally mounted upon said attaching means, and means cooperating with the form to effect a stretching of the garment between the form and last mentioned means when the form is moved in one direction uponits pivot.
21. In a coat shoulder pressing device, a pivoted form whose outer end is rounded on its upper surface and adapted for projection into the inner end of a coat sleeve with its other end disposed for engagement by the collar of the garment, and means constructed and arranged to engage the arm-pit of the garment and hold the latter when the form is moved upon its pivot to effect a stretching of the garment between the shoulder and the arm-pit of the garment.
