PRESSING MACHINE ACCESSORY Filed Oct. 29, 1954 QINVENTOR FRANK x smmaowv ATTORNEY United StatesPatent 'O 2,875,536 PRESSING MACHINE ACCESSORY Frank Y. Sherbondy, San Antonio, Tex.
Application October 29, 1954, Serial No. 465,483
1 Claim. (Cl. 38-12) Theinvention relates to a pressing machine accessory and has for an object to provide a means to be removably mounted on the bed of the machine to hold a garment, particularly trousers, stretching the same over the presser buck of the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a holding means for the stated purpose and which comprises a novel form of clamp having a fixed jaw and a laterally movable jaw, removably positioned adjacent the smaller end of thepresser buck of the machine and transversely with respect thereto to receive the cuffed end of the leg portion of trousers between the same; the top surfaces of the jaws being disposed substantially in the plane of the upper surface of the presser buck, so that the leg portion will lay on the latter in a fiat stretched condition.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the holding means or clamp and its mounting, in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of an end vportion of the pressing machine and showing the manner of mounting the holding means or clamp on the bed of the machine and its operative relation with respect to the adjacent end of the presser buck and the leg portion of trousers on the latter; the holding means or clamp and its mounting being in end elevation.
Referring to the drawing, B designates the bed of a conventional pressing machine and B the presser buck supported in overlying relation with respect to the bed and with which a pressing head (not shown) cooperates.
The holding means constituting the invention comprises a standard rising from the bed B in slightly spaced relation with respect to the adjacent end of the presser buck B and a two-part clamp structure carried horizontally by the upper end of the standard and cross wise with respect to the end of the presser buck; the clamp comprising a jaw 12, fixedly mounted at its vertical center on the outer side of the upper end of the standard 10, and a second jaw 14 movable into and out of clamping relation with respect to the fixed jaw.
The two jaws 12 and 14 are elongatedand of a length somewhat greater than that of a cuff C (Fig. 2) of the trouser leg portion T; the fixed jaw 12 having a straight, i. e. flat outer side abutting the outer side of the standard 10, ,which side merges into an outwardly curved portion 12a, at one end, and a portion of a somewhat reduced thickness at its other end, while its inner side is formed with an arcuate depression 12' centered between the high points of oppositely and inwardly sloping surfaces 12". The movable jaw 14 has its inner side i. e. the side opposed to the adjacent side of the fixed jaw also provided with an arcuate depression 14 centered between oppositely extending straight, i. e. fiat surfaces 14".
The movable jaw 14 is pivoted at one end for outward swinging movement relatively to the fixed jaw 12 engaged in a recess 120, formed in the outwardly curved end 12a of the fixed jaw 12 and with a pivot pin 16 passing downwardly through the curved end 12a, the recess 12c and the tongue 14a.
To secure the movable jaw 14 in clamping relation with respect to the fixed jaw 12, a latching device is provided and the same comprises a threaded shank 20 having an eye 22 at one end and a clamping knob 24 threaded thereon; the eye 22 being engaged on a pivot pin 18 passing downwardly through a recess 14b formed in the free end of the jaw 14, so that the shank 20 may be swung into engagement with a slot 12d formed in the free end of the fixed jaw 12. A washer 21 is slidably received on the shank 20 and is disposed between the knob 24 and the jaw 12 when the jaws are in clamping position. This washer 21 is to prevent wear of the jaw 12 when the knob 24 is tightened to clamp the pants cuffs between the jaws 12 and 14.
The standard 10 which is preferably rectangular in cross-section, as shown, is supported at its lower end in a mounting member 28 of block-like form secured to the bed B of the pressing machine by supporting flanges 30 extending laterally from the top end thereof, the flanges being secured to the bed B by screws or the like passing through the apertures 32. When not in use the clamp and standard 10 may be removed from the mounting member 28 thus leaving the pressing machine free for pressing operations.
In use the trouser legs T to be stretched are placed on the buck B with the cuffs C received between the jaws 12 and 14 and with the seam portions of the cuffs disposed in the recesses 12 and 14'. The shank 20 is dis posed in the slot 12d and the knob 24 tightened to securely clamp the cuffs C between the jaws 12 and 14. The trouser legs T are steamed and pulled in a direction away from the clamping devices. This results in providing legs of equal length and provides a convenient means to hold the trousers during the stretching operation. The cuffs may then be removed from the clamping device and the pants pressed.
It will be evident that the gripping efiect of the jaws on the engaged trousers cuff is greatly enhanced by the nature of the formations of the opposed sides of the fixed jaw 12 which has high points formed by the juncture of the inner ends of the sloping surface portions 12" with the ends of the arcuate depression 12 against which intermediate portions of the engaged cuff are compressed by the action of the points of juncture of the flat surfaces 14" with the opposite ends of the arcuate depression 14' at the inner side of the movable jaw 14.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from thespirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is described in the specification and shown in the drawing, but only as indicated in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In combination a pressing machine having a presser buck, a clamping device removably supported on said machine at one end of said presser buck in alignment with the upper surface thereof, said clamping device comprising a fixed jaw mounted on a standard and extending transversely of said presser buck, said standard being removably received in a socket on said machine, a laterally movable jaw pivotally mounted at one end on one end of said fixed jaw, a slot in the opposite end of said fixed jaw, opposed arcuate recesses in the confronting faces of said fixed and movable jaws, adjustable latch means for said movable jaw comprising a threaded shank Patented Mar. 3, 1959 References Cited the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Brenner Mar. 8, 1881 Smith Jan. 7, 1890 OBrien Jan. 8, 1918 Ferguson Sept. 12, 1922 Richards June 3, 1930 Tutino Feb. 1, 1955
