Patented May 19, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WORK-HOLDER Daniel H. Chason, Elizabeth, N. J., assignor to The Singer Manufacturing Company, Elizabeth, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application January 10, 1935, Serial No. 1,150
1 Claim.
whichholds one end or side of cloth or other flexible material when it is desirable to subject the material to tension for the purpose of ripping a seam or performing other operations thereon.
The several features of the present invention will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a perspective View of a work-holder embodying the invention in its preferred form.
Figure 2 is a rear side elevation.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional View taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure i is a rear side elevation, partly in section, to show the relation of the parts.
In the embodiment shown, my improved workholder comprises a clamp l of substantial U- shaped formation, the upper limb of which is adapted to engage a table-top 2. The lower limb has a threaded opening therethrough in which is threaded a clamping-screw 3 having a swivel head f2 for engagement with the under face of the table. The clamp is lined with felt or other soft fibrous material as shown vat I in Figure 2.
Formed integral with the clamp I is a lower Jaw 5 having a lateral extending clamping portion 6. Pivotally secured by the pivot-pin 'I to the lower jaw 5 is an upper jaw 8 having on its free end a laterally extending clamping portion 9 which cooperates with the clamping portion E. The other end of the upper jaw 8 is bifurcated to form the arms Ill and Ill which embrace an eccentric II pivotally secured to the xed lower jaw 5 by the pivot-pin I2. Formed integral with the cam I I is a nger-lever I3.
From the foregoing it will be evident that when S the linger-lever I3 is raised the eccentric II acts on thev arm IQ to positively swing the upper jaw 8 in a counter-clockwise direction about its pivot to open the jaws and when the lever I3 is depressed the cam il acts on the arm Iil to posiii) tively close the jaws.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein isz- A Work-holder comprising a sheet-metal body portion bent flatwise of itself into a U-shaped clamp to embrace the edge of a table-top, a clamp screw threaded into the lower limb of the U- clamp, the upper leg of the U having a flat upstanding stationary member extended at one side in the plane of said member to form an upwardly curved limb the free end of which is bent over laterally to form a clamping jaw, a movable sheet-metal member having a body portion pivoted toK said stationary member and exten-ded at one side to form a downwardly curved limbthe free end of which is bent laterally to form a clamping jaw opposed to the lirst mentioned clamping jaw, the body portion of said movable member being formed with a slot, and a hand operated eccentric member pivoted to the first mentioned member and engaging the walls of said slot.
DANIEL H. CHASON.
