rnnssrne DEVICE.
Application filed October 28, 1922. Serial No. 597,519.
To all whom it vim- 2] concern Be it known that LLORENZ F. Morena,
a citizen ofthe United States, residingat Newton Center, in the county of lwliddlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pressing operator upon which is mounted the wiper )evices, of which ,tl following is a specification, reference. being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a pressing device for use on folding machines of the general type shown in the joint application for Letters .Patent filed in the United States Patent Office by Lorenz Muther and Frederick S. Glines on July 24:, 1922, Serial No. 576,965.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a pressing device for folding machines in which the work engaging. portionis capable of adjustment in relation to the other folding instrumentalities in order to take care of work of varying character.
Other objects of the invention will he more specifically set forth and described. hereinafter.
Briefly, my invention contemplates the provision of a'pressing member in; which the work-engaging portion is made adjustable with relation to the main body or arm of said member; this adjustment being preferably in a direction transverse to the normal line of feed of the machine. this means, the pressing member maybe adapted to varying conditions of work, such as variations in the width of binding tape used and in the radii of the convex curved portions of the work. I
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is an end elevation of a portion of a folding machine of the type above referr d to showing a pressing device constructed. and operated in accordance with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
of said portion of said. machine as viewed from the operators position; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale of the pressing member on line 3-3 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a view in perspective on an enlarged scale of the work engaging portion of said pressing member. 2
Referring to the drawings, 15 indicates thelower arm of the machine, 20 a feed bar mounted in a housing 22 and adapted for reciprocation in said housing and for forward and backward movement for feeding the material. The feed bar 20 cooperates with an idler roll 21 held in place bya screw stud 32. A guide bar 35 having its lower arm formed with a guiding edge 36 is held in a depending position over the work. indicates a work support having a 'bevelled edge 51 toward the 53 having a portion 54 bent under the work plate and a thin edge 55 turned up and slightly hooked over, said edge being oblique with the normal line of feel, and 58 indicates a plow or turner. All of the fore going parts and the functions and modelof operation are fully-shown and described in said Muther-Glines application.
The novel features of my invention re.- side in the provision of a pressing member having an adjustable work-engaging portion. In the form of the invention shown,
the presser-arm 60 is provided with a transverse end-piece 92 having a longitudinal open groove 93 in its lower face which is adapted to receive a tongue 94' formed on the upper face of a work-engaging portion 95. Any suitable means may be employed for locking the portion 95 in adjusted position upon the end-piece 92 such as a headed screw 96 mounted in a slot '97 in said end-piece and adapted to engage a threaded hole 98 in the portion 95. The head of the screw 96 overlaps the sides of the slot 97 and thereby when tightened holds the work-engaging portion in tight engagement with the end-piece. The work' engaging portion may be of any suitable contour but asshown is provided with a toe-portion 99 extending toward the operator. v
In the use of folding machines of this character. it is important that the pressing member he s) located witn respect to the plow or turning member, that the turned over portion be pressed down upon the reverse side of the material without subjecting the turned-over portion to undue strain.
Ithas been found as a general rule that better results are accomplished by a close grouping of the folding instrumentalities so long as such grouping does notafiect the natural curve of the turned over edge, or cause a bunching of the binding. 'Under such conditions, however, if a wide binding be used and the pressing member is close tothe plow,'there is a tendency for the binding to be crowded between the plow and presser. This causes the binding to buckle or Wrinkle thereby preventing a smooth fold being obtained and Which difficulty may, however, be overcome by moving the pressing-member away from the plow suflioient-ly to allow the Wide binding to fold over Without bunching By making the Work-engaging portion of the pressing member adjustable my pressing device may be adapted for bindingsot different widths.
It is to be noticed that the adjustment may be easily and expeditiously made by the operator merely by manipulation'ot the screw 96, The loosenin of the screw 361- mits the Work-engaging portion to be moved into proper position to suit the particular kind of binding 'Wlien the tightening; of
the screw completes the adjustment.
' lVhatI claim 1s:
1.,In a folding machine, the combination of means for feeding material having a binding attached to the edge thereof, a plow for turning said, binding around the edge of said. material and means arranged- ,forWar-d of the plow and in closeproxnnity end-piece'having a longitudinal slot therethrough and a longitudinal groove in its low- 'er face, a Work-engaging portion having a longitudinal tongue fittings-said groove and a SCIGVVlOCBI-Q'Cl in said slot'and having its end threaded in the said Work-engaging portion for securing said Work-engaging portionin adjusted position on said end-piece,
turned binding upon the body portion of said "material, said pressing means compris' ing an arm, a Work-engaging" portion mounted on said arm forward of the plow and in close proximity thereto and provided with a toe portion encircling the nose of said plow, said Work-engaging portion being normally fixed on said arm but capable of adjustment in a direction transverseto the normal line of feed, v
In witness whereof, 'I hereunto setm; hand this leth day OI OCtOlO6L1922.
