CLOTHES WRINGEB No. 465,553. Patented Dec. 22, 1891.
will 7 WITN E5555 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM II. BERLIS, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CLOTH ES-WRINGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,553, dated December 22, 1891.
Application filed February 16, 1891. Serial No. 381,611. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. BERLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Vringers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
My invention relates particularly to the means for attaching the wringer to the tub or other support, and particularly consists in improvements in the construction of the clamping device.
The object of the invention is to provide a quiclcacting clamp, which will be efficient and will adjust itself to various kinds of supports.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows:
Figure 1 is an end elevation view of a clotheswringer provided with my improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a section view on the line at a: in Fig. 1.
A designates the clothes-wringing machine; A, the bracket to which the clamp is pivoted; B,the main arm of the clamp; B', the pivoted clamp-jaw; D, a swiveled pad or button on the end of the jaw B, and O the cam-lever by which the jaw is operated. The cam-lever C is pivoted in a slot or fork in the lower end of the arm B, and it is provided with a groove 0 on its side around its lobe, near the periphery of the same. The jaw B is pivoted to the arm B somewhat back of its pivot, and on its back is a face for the cam to act upon, and a claw 1) extends from the jaw over onto the cam and hooks down into the groove 0. The jaw is pushed forward by the cam acting against the back of the jaw, and it is drawn back by the claw 1?, being engaged with the groove 0. On the clamping end of the jaw is a swiveled pad or button such as is commonly used on clamping-screws.
I am aware that it is common to use a camlever in clamps, and such levers have been used in the clamps of clothes-wringersfor example, see United States Patents Nos. 34,885 and 68,732, and particularly in Patent No. 128,119 to D. M. Cole, on which my construe tion may be considered an improvement.
What I claim as new is 1. In a clothes-wringer, the combination, with the wringer-frame A and bracket A, of the arm B, pivoted in said bracket, the jaw B, pivoted on said arm B, and the cam-lever O, pivoted on said arm backof said jaw and acting upon the back of the same.
2. In a clothes-wringer, the combination, with the wringer-frame A and bracket A, of the arm B, pivoted on said bracket, the jaw B, pivoted on said arm and having a claw I),
and the cam-lever O, pivoted on said arm back of said jaw and having a peripheral groove 0 to receive said claw b.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. BERLIS.
