SAD-IRON-BALANCING MECHANISM.
lTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KAuAGHIEL Gr. BorA- JIAN, a subject of the Sultan of Turkey, residing at Swarthmore, in the county of Delaware andv State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new "and useful Improvements in Sad-Iron-Balancing Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sad iron balancing mechanism, and has for an object to provide an improved mechanism whereby the operator in using the iron will be relieved of its weight, yet allowing a wide range of movement and adjust- `ment and pressure.
Another object is to provide a mechanism of this character to assist the operator in the manipulation of the iron, permitting him to utilize the full weight of the iron at any time, and also providing means whereby the iron balancing weight may be elevated by the use of a foot lever located in convenient position to theironing table.
A further object is to provide an improved mechanism whereby the iron can be readily attached or detached, yet allowing the handle free of any encumbrances and also providing means wherebythe evice holding the iron or the elevating cord, can be quickly attached or detached, and offering a wide range of adjustment.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consistsin certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of my improvements, certain parts being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating a sad iron embodying my improved attaching means.
l represents a pipe which is adapted to i be held in position by means of the cups or socket pieces 2 and 3 respectively, which are screwed or otherwise fastened 'to the ioor 4 and ceiling 5 of the work room in which my improvements are to be utilized.
A collar 6 is clamped on the pipe `1 and provides a mounting for the pipe 7, which extends outwardly at right angles 'to the pipe 1.

vide a chain 8 secured to the pipe 1 by av hook 9, and to the pipe 7 by an'eye '10.
The elevating and lowering ofthe rope 15 is controlled by my improved foot lever 17 which is fulcrumed in a bracket 18, secured to the floor 4. This lever 17 which is positioned in some convenient place adjacent the ironing table 18, is provided with a foot rest 19 in easy reach of the operator.
Atthe end of the lever 17, adjacent the weight 16, I provide a forked bar 20 between which passes the rope 15. To hold the rope 15 in the forked bar, I provide a pin 21. A-thin` metalplate 21a is secured to the rope above the forked bar, so that the weight may be lifted as clearly shown in F ig. 1 of the accompanying drawings.
On the end of the rope 15, opposite the end on which the weight 16 is attached, I place an ordinary snap hook 22, which serves to engage a short chain 23. This chain23 is passed through the eye 25.. At the other end of the chain 23, I employ a snap hook 24 for purposes of adjustment of my improved iron holder 26.
I For attaching my iron holder 26 to the iron, I have illustrated one simple'way, but do not limit myself'to the particular construction, as many-other ways might be employed with equal eiiiciency.
A single piece of wire 27 is wrapped around the lower portion of the handle 28 of the iron 29, and at a point between the handle, is bent around forming an eye 30 which engages the hooked end 31 of the holder 26. The holder 26 is bowed as shown at 32, so that the same will not interfere in any way with the hand of the operator.
As wiilbe 'clearly seen from the drawings, when -the operator desires to use the iron, he will place his foot on the foot rest 19. causing the lever 17 to fulcrum and lift the weight 16, thus allowing the full weight of the iron to be applied to the work, and when the iron is to be elevated again, it is the precise details set forth, but consider" myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A mechanism of the character described, comprising a support, a bar on the support and pulleys on the said bar, a flexible device, a weight on one end ofthe flexible device, means for attaching an iron to the other end of the flexible device, and means for elevating the said Weight, substantially as described.
2. A mechanism of the character described, comprising a support, ay bar on the support, and pulleys on the said bar, alever, fulcrumed between its ends, a flexible device, a Weight on one end of the flexible device, means 0n the other end ofthe flexible device for attaching an iron, and means for attachingthe end of the said lever, adjacentV the said Weight to the said flexible device, substantially as described.
