O. E. BEARDSLEY. DRAIN VALVE ATTACHMENT POR PUMPS.
No. 507,961. Patented Oct. 31, 1893.
.mm lllllllmm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR E. BEARDSLEY, OF TREMPEALEAU, WISCONSIN.
DRAIN-VALVE ATTACHMENT FOR PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,961,6.ated October 31, 1.893.
i Application filed une 3, 189.3. Serial No. 476,420. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR E. BEARDSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trempealeau, in the county of Trempealeau and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Drain-Valve Attachment forPumps, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drainage valve attachments for pumps; and it has for its object to provide certain improvements in attachments of this character Which can be easily and securely fastened or attached to any ordinar-y pump pipe, so as to provide means for draining such pipes of standing Water therein, to prevent freezing in Winter, and also to relieve it of standing Warm Water in summer.
To this end the main and primary objectof the present invention is to provide certain improvements in drainage valve pump attachments which shall render the same more durable and efficient than similar devices now in use.
With these and other objects in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pump havinga drainage valve attachment applied thereto as contemplated by the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the valve attachment and a portion of the pump to which it is attached.` Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the sectional attachment clamp.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents an ordinary pump, arranged at the surface of the ground on the Well platform B, and having the ordinary pump pipe C, which extends into the Well, from which the Water is to be drawn, and is provided at a point below frost line with a side drainage opening D. Securely attached to the pump pipe C, directly above its side drainage opening D,is the sectional attachment clamp E. The sectional attachment clamp E, is provided with the opposite pairs of securing ears F,- engaged by the clamping bolts G, which serve to securely bind the sectional clamp to the pump pipe, and said clamp 1s further provided .with the separate parallel o-standing pivot ears H, the extremities of which receive the pivot pin or bolt I, which forms-a pivot for the inner end of the valve lever J. The valve lever J, which is thus pivotally connected at one end to the attachment clamp, is provided at a point intermediate of its ends With the curved valve arm K, the end of which is disposed toward the pump pipe and is provided With a socket L. The socket L, at the extremity of the curved valve arm K, is adapted to .removably receive one end of the rubber valve plug M, adapted to t over the side drainage opening D, of the pumppipe and to normallyclose the same, so as to allow all the Water to pass out through the pump when the same is in operation.
The outer unpivoted end of the valve lever J, terminates in a hook N, which removably receives the loop O, secured to the Weight P, which serves to normally hold the valve plug tightly over the side drainage openings, but after pumping, the valve lever is lifted, so as to draw the valve plug away from the vpump pipe, by means of the lifting rod or Wire Q, attached at one end to said valve lever and leading to the top of the Well, convenient to the control of a person.
From the foregoing it Will be seen that while the herein described valve attachment is simple, still lthe same possesses several points of advantage which will be readily observed by those skilled in the art, and at this point it may be Well to note that it is desirable to hold the valve attachment suspended away from the drainage opening Without the necessity of a person holding onto the rod Q. In order to provide for thus supporting the valve attachment and leaving the drainage opening D, uncovered, I provide the lifting rod Q, at its upper end with an eye R, adapted to be lifted into engagement With the supporting hook S, projected from one side of the clamp T, embracing the pump A. rlhis is clearly shown in dotted lines Fig. 1,0f the drawings. f
Having thus described the invention, Wha is claimed, and desired to be secured byLetters Patent, isj In a pump attachment, the combination with the pump-,pipe having a side drainage ICO opening; of an attachment kclamp fastened `to onto the hook-end of the valve 1ever,a1ifting the pump ipipe above said opening land havrodattaohedafc its lower .end to said valve ing separate oistanding pivot-ears carrying lever, and means for holding the latter in an t 5 a pivot-pin at their outer ends, a valve lever elevated position, substantially as set forth. 5 pivoted at one end on said pivot pin and ter' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as minating at its other free end in a hook, said, my own I have hereto affixed my signature in valve lever being filinther previded,=near1 irtsi the preseneeoftwo witnesses.
