to thereby hold the standard rigidly in position. l The upper'end of the standard 18 is curved so as to overhang the elbow 3 and the valve 4, and is formed with a loop 22, the axis of which is vertical, and Vin alinement with the axis of the valve 4. A bolt or clamping member 23 is passed through the parts of the standard 18 adjoining the loop 22, so as to contract the loop 22 for the purposes which will hereinafter appear.
The lever 17 is spring pressed so as to facilitate seating the valve 4, and to this end, there is provided a clip 24 embracing the pipe 2 below the outer arm of the lever 17 and having a bolt or pivot member 25 passed through its ends or ears, an upright stem 2G being pi'voted to the bolt 25 and having its upper end passing loosely through the outer arm of the lever `17. A nut or adjustable stop 27 is threaded on the upper end of the stem 26 and engages over the end of the lever y17, a coiled wire compression spring 28 being disposed around the stem 2G between thel clip 24 and the lever 17, to yieldingly raise the respective end or arm of the lever against the nut or stop 27, and to thereby seat the valve yieldingly. 1t will thus be evident that the lever 17 carried by the standard 18 serves to maintain the valve in position with respect to its seat, the valve being adapted to swing in the plane of the lever 17,'so as to seat most effectively. j
It will be evident that when the lever 6 is swung, the rod or link 5 being pulled up wardly, will unseat the valve, and will also swing the lever, against the tension of the spring 28, so that after the lever 6 is released, the spring 28 will again seat the valve, assisted by the pressure of the water within the tank.
When it is desired to automaticallyv 'open or unseat the valve 4 after the level of the water within the tank reaches a predetermined height, the lever 17 is oat controlled The lever 17 is fulcrumed or4 in the following manner: An extension or bar 29 is attachedto ythe inner arm of the lever v17, the extension 29 having the earsl or lips 30 to embrace one end or arm of the lever 17 and a bolt or clamping member 31 engages through the lever 17 and the eXtension 29 to secure them together, A vertically disposed rod 32 has its lower end pivoted to the free end of the extension 29, the rod 32 being adapted to be adjusted at various points along the extension 29, and a T-coupling 33 is slidably disposed on the rod 32 and carries a set screw 34 for clamping the coupling 33 at 'any adjusted position. A pipe section 35 is threaded into the angular arm or branch or the T=coupling j 33, and has an elbow 36 threaded onto its outer or free end, a short pipe section 37 be- ;ing threaded into the free arm of the elbow 36, and projecting upwardly, while the pipe section 35 is disposed at right angles with `respect tothe rod 32, 'the upper end of the pipe section "37 being threaded into the socket 38 formed on the bottom of the hollow float 39. From the foregoing, it will be evident that by-.adjusting the Tecoupling or slide 33, the float 39 may be suitably disposed with 'respect to the 'rod 32 lto properly raise the exten-sion 29 when the level of the water reaches a predetermined height, `and to consequently unseat the valve 4 by raising the respective arm of the lever 17 against the tension of the spring 28.
1n order to prevent the rod or linkt from becoming frozen within the water, in cold weather, and in order to guide the rod or :link 5, a vertical tube 40 surrounds the rod 5 and passes through the loop 22 of the standjard 18. The Atube 40 extends for a sufficient :distance al'aove the normal or highest water level, and extends below the said level for .a considerable distance. r1`he tube 40 em- {bodies the lower Section 41 which is emtbraced by the loop 22, a cap or socket nut 42 `being threaded onto the lower end of the section 41, acoupling sleeve 43 threaded over the upper end of the section 41, a coupling 44 having a nipple threaded into the upper end of the coupling sleeve 43, and an upper section 45 having its lower end threaded into the socket formed at the upper end of the coupling 44. It will be understood, of
course, that the particular construction of the tube 45 'may` be altered without disturbing its functions. The cap 42, and couplings 43 and 44 provide packing boxes adapted to rev'ceive any suitable packing'46, the packing being compressed against or embracing the l rod or link 5 when the respective parts of the tube are tightened, thus preventing the water from rising vinto the tube, from its ;lower end", and Ypreventing the water from yleaking into the tube at the various joints. In this manner, the rod or link 5, is guided for vertical reciprocatory movements `in a desirable manner, and by excluding the water from the tube 4.0, the rod or link will not be liable to become frozen within the tube or guide.

`an actuating rod passing through the said guide and having its lower end pivotally connected tothe said pivot member, a valve pivotally connectedto the said pivot member and coperatin with the said valve seat, and a float attacher' `toone arm of the lever for nnseating the valve` when the level of the contents of the tank rises to a predetermined level.

The combination with a tank, and a discharge pipe therefor having an upwardly extending valve seat within the tank, of a vertically disposed rod, means connected to ivot the upper end of the rod for actuating the saine, an inverted Urshaped member secured to the lower end of the rod, `a valvecoperating with the said seat, an upright U shaped member secured tothe valve, the
arms of the two U-shaped members? being overlapped, a pivot member passing through the said overlapped arms, and a lever fuL crumed within theta-nk and having one arm engaged to the said pivot member.
4. The combination with a tank, anda dis charge pipe therefor, having an upwardly extending valve seat Withinvthe tank, of a guide supported above the valve seat, a rod passing through the guide, a lever fulcrumed within the tank and pivotally connected to the lower end of the rod, a valve carried by the lever cooperating with" the said seat, means connected to the upper end of the rod for raising the same manually, and an attachment engaged to one arm of the said `lever and including a iioat for automatically unseating the valve. when lthe water level rises to a predetermined height.
