VALVE FOR FLUSHING-TANKS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. QUINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State 0f Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves for Flushing-Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valves for flushing tanks and especially with reference to the provision of a spring for forciblymoving a valve to its seat and holding the valve normally so tightly closed against the seat as to prevent waste of water from the tank.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a detailed sectional view of a portion of a iushing tank provided with a valve and a spring for closin the valve and arranged in accordance wit my invention.

The flushing tank 1 is provided with the usual water valve 2 which closes downwardly on theseat 3 at the upper end of the flush or discharge pipe 4. The usual over-flow pipe is indicated at 5.
The valve rod 8 passes through an opening in a guide arm 9 which is secured to the over-How pipe by means of a pin 10. A leader arm 11 has an eye or opening 12 at one end through which the over-flow pipe extends so that the leader arm is arranged for vertical movement onthe over-flow ipe. The opposite end of the leader arm ears on the valve and is provided with an upwardly extending tubular portion 13 through' which the valve rod loosely extends.
A coiled extensile spring 14 is arranged on the valve rod and between the guide arm and the leader arm and with its lower end arranged around the tubular member of the leader arm. A washer 16 is at the upper end of the spring and bears under the guide arm.
This spring exerts pressure downwardly on the valve and causes the valve to close forcibly against the valve seat and holds the valve tightly closed and hence prevents leakage of Water from the flushing tank, against the tension of the spring, to cause the flushing tank to operate, as will be understood, the leader arm moving vertically with the valve and serving to guide and direct the valve so that it will be certain under all conditions to close tightly against the valve seat. The valve may be made of any suitable material and the other parts of the device may also be made of any suitable material.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In combination with the valve seat and over-flow pipe of a flushing tank, a valve to close downwardly on the valve seat and having an upwardly extending rod, a leader arm bearing on the valve and connected to the over-flow pipe for vertical movement Y thereon, and a springbearing downwardly on the leader arm and hence exerting its tension to normally close the valve and to tightly hold the latter in closed position on the valve seat.
2. In combination with the valve seat and over-How pipe of a flushing tank, a valve to close downwardly von the valve seat and having an upwardly extending rod, a leader arm bearing on the valve and connected to the over-flow pipe for vertical movement thereon, a spring bear-ing downwardly on the leader arm and hence exerting its tension to normally close the valve and to tightly hold the latter in closed position on the valve Seat, and a guide arm for the valve rod and attached to the overflow pipe, the spring being arranged on the valve rod and between the guide arm and the leader arm.
