L. H. TUTT VALVE CLOSING MECHANISM FOR WATER CLOSETS Filed Jan. 18. 1924 Patented Feb. 10, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
LEO HARRY TUTT, OIF TOWANDA, KANSAS.
VALVE-CLOSING MECI-I'ANISM FOR WATER CLOSETS.
Application led January 18, 1924. Serial No. 687,036.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO HARRY TUTT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Towanda, in the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Closing Mechanism for Water Closets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to the art of water closets and has more particular reference to a means whereby the usual outlet valves thereof may be moved to a closed position in the event that it is not desired to use the entire contents of the water tank or in the event that the sewerage system is stopped up for thereby preventing the water from overflowing and spilling upon the Hoor. The primary-object of the invention resides in the provision of such a valve closing mechanism for water closets that may be manufactured, marketed and installed at low cost, and one wherein the same will operate effectively under all conditions.
With the above and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described,
shown in the accompanying drawing andv claimed.
In the drawing the figure is a vertical transverse sectional view of a water closet equipped with my improved valve closing mechanism.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 designates the usual wooden water tank employed in closet flushing systems and that is provided with an internal lining 6 of sheet metal. As is well known, these tanks are equipped with a control valve 7 upon the lower end of a rod S these valves adapted for seating arrangement upon the upper end of a discharge pipe 9 that extends through an opening formed in the bottom wall of the tank 5 and that are adapted to be displaced from said pipe 9 through well known mechanism.
My invention per se embodies the provision of an externally screw-threaded tubular member l0 adapted to be screw-threadedly arranged in a threaded opening 11 in the front wall of the tank 5 and at a point preferably above the metallic lining 6. Freely horizontally movable in reverse directions within said tubular member 10 is a rod 12 that is formed at its front end with a thumb button 13 and that is formed at its inner end with an eye portion 14 for arrangement within an `opening 15 in the upper arm of a bell crank 16. This bell crank 16 is pivot'ally supported as at 17 upon an L-shaped bracket 18 that is secured to the inner projecting end of the tubular member 10 in any well known manner and preferably in the manner shown.
The extreme upper end of this arm of said bell crank 16 is connected through the medium of a retractile spring 19 to the connected end of the bracket 18 which spring normally maintains said bell crank in the position shown in the figure.
The other arm of this bell crank 16 is provided with a series of openings 20 for the selective reception of the upper eyed end 21 of a hanging rod 22 which rod is provided at' its lower end with a lateral loopl portion 23 that fits loosely over the before mentioned valve rod 8 and at a point with respect to the valve 7 for allowing the unseating of the same from the pipe 9.
From the foregoing it will at once be obvious that when the Valve 7 is raised from the inlet end of the pipe 9 the same may be moved to a closed position whenever it is necessary by simply pushing upon the button 13, for thereby causing a swinging movement of the bell crank 16 against the action of the spring 19 for thereby forcing the rod 22 into engagement with the valve.
Numerous advantages of a device of this character will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art, and even though l. have herein set forth the most practical embodiment of the invention with which I am at this time familiar, it is nevertheless to be understoodthat minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A flush valve attachment comprising a tank having a valve seat and a valve adapted to close against the seat, a sleeve threaded through the side of the tank, a bracket arm adjustably mounted upon the sleeve and having angularly disposed end portions, a bell crank lever pivoted upon the lOO inner end of the bracket arm, a rod pvoted to one arm of the bell crank lever, and having a loop ,c which receives the `stern of trhe valve,v zd tractle spring connectingthe `other arm of the bell crank lever with the upper end of the bracket arm, and a rod pivotal'ly connected with the bellv crank lever ab a point between the fulcrum of the said lever and the spring7 the last mentioned rod passing lolggt'uclnally through the said sleeve.
