Description

No. 870,593. PATENTED NOV. 12, 1907. A. SPROGIS. LOGGING HOOK. APPLICATION FILED 1330.19. 1906.
Q Howie a AUGUST SPROGIS, OF GLEASON, WISCONSIN.
LOGGING-HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Noe. 12, 1907.
Application filed December 19. 1906. Serial No. 3481514.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that l, A UGUST Srnoers, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Gleason, in the county of Lincoln and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Logging-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to logging hooks, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a hook with a locking lever and trip for releasing the hook from the wrapping chain which holds the logs upon the car.
Another object of my invention is to provide a logging hook in which all the parts will be inclosed within a casing and thus protected from the weather.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a logging hook made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the hook. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking lever.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the casing provided with an eye 2 for one end of the wrapping chain. This casing is hollow and pivoted upon a screw 3 is a hook 4, said hook having a curved shank 5 extending into the casing and provided with a curved portion 6 at its upper end. A locking lever 7 is provided with trunnions S at its upper end, said trunnions being journaled in the casing 1 upon one side and in a detachable plate 9 secured to the casing by means of screws 10. The locking lever is provided with a curved projection 11 between the trunnions which is adapted to engage the curved portion 6 of the shank 5 of the hook when said locking lever is in the full line position shown in Fig. 2. The lever '7 is held in its locking position by means of a pin 12 extending through registered openings in the casing and through an opening 13 in the locking lever. The pin 12 is connected to the lever 7 by means of a chain 14 suspended from a ring or eye 15 secured to the lever 7. A ring 16 is connected to the eye 15 for the attachment of a. tripping chain designed for thepurpose of pulling out the lever into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 to permit the hook 4 to swing into the dotted line position in said figure for releasing the wrapping chain.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: The wrapping chain, having been passed around a load of logs and connected to the hook 4, will be held against accidental detachment by means of the pin 12 which holds the locking lever 7 in place. When it is desired to disconnect the wrapping chain from the logs for unloading the same, the pin 12 is withdrawn and the tripping chain connected to the ring 16 is pulled to swing the locking lever outward in the position shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines, thus permitting the hook 4 to assume the dotted line position in said figure and release the wrapping chain.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my safety logging hook is comparatively simple in construction; all the operative parts are inclosed within a casing and thus protected from the weather; that the hook can be quickly tripped by pulling upon a chain out of harms way; that the device is comparatively simple in construction, can be manufactured at comparatively slight cost, and is strong, durable and eflicient in use.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
A logging chain comprisingn casing, a hook pivoted within the casing and provided with a shank extending within the casing, said shank having a curved end, a locking lever provided with trunnions. and a curved portion to engage the curved end of the shank of the hook, and a pin to hold said locking lever in locking position.
In testimony whereof, I attix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST SPROGIS.
