CLOTHES-LINE PROP AND HOLDER Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1907.
Application filed December 1, 1906. Serial No. 345,396.
To a whom it may concern.-
* Be it known that I, ADA BYRON GREER, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of I/Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Props and Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a clothes line prop and'holder that will be simple in construction and in which the clothes-line will be securely held in a bifurcated end of the prop through the medium of a cam-lever to draw the two bifurcated ends together against the line and providing the lower end. of the prop with a pivoted crescent shaped foot having stops to limit its pivotal action, thereby securing a prop and holder of superior construction and possessing strength and durability.
The invention consists in a clothes line prop and holder constructed substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of the prop and holder showing the clothes line held thereby. Fig. 2 a horizontal cross section through the cam lever and prop. Fig. 3 a detail perspective view of the cam-lever. Fig. 4 a similar view of the pivoted crescent shaped foot.
In the accompanying drawings A represents the prop of any suitable length and thickness and constructed of a wood that will possess sufficient resiliency so that when bifurcated as shown at a two spring jaws B C are provided between which the clothes line may be clamped thereby utilizing the end. of the wood clothes prop itself as a means of clamping and holding the clothes line with.- out the necessity of any additional clamps except means for drawing the spring jaws together against the line which consists as follows:
The spring jaws B C are prevented from expanding sufficiently to split down through the bifurcation a by means of a bracket D secured to each of the jaws, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The bracket D has an opening of circular form as shown at b and fitting within the opening is a hub on the cam-lever E and held therein by a bolt 0 and nut (Z engaging the screw threaded end of the bolt, said hub being shown at e and forms a part of the cam lever as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The bolt 0 which forms the pivot to the lever extends eccentrically through the hub e whereby said lever will have a cam action to draw toward each other the spring jaws B C and against the clothes line in the bifurcation a.
To the lower end of the prop A is pivoted at f a crescent shaped foot F having upon its inner side suitable stops g which limit the pivotal movement thereof and form rests for the lower end of the prop when brought to an angle as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, also enabling the points or ends of the foot to more readily embed themselves in the ground, as the foot is held substantially horizontal through the medium of the stops.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. A clothes line prop and holder, means at its upper end to hold the clothes line thereto, and a crescent shaped foot at the lower end, pivoted to one face thereof, and stops projecting laterally from the inner face of said foot and between which the lower end of said prop and holder is received, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A clothes line prop and holder constructed of wood and bifurcated to form integral spring jaws between which the clothes line may be clamped, a bracket secured to said jaws and extending across the bifurcation, said. bracket having an opening of circular form opposite one of said jaws, a cam-lever having a hub fitted in said opening, a bolt passed through said lever and its hub and through the jaw, and a nut engaging the screw threaded end. of said bolt upon the opposite face of the jaw.
