J. A. W. SEARS.
'WASHBOARD HOLDER.
No. 554,091. Patented Feb. 4, 1896.
WITNESSES: uwslvm AN DREW IJWMMH. PHUTD'LITHD. WABHI NED-EEC UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. V. SEARS, OF ESOANABA, MICHIGAN.
WASHBOARVDQ-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 4,091, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed October 7, 1895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. W. SEARs, of Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vashboard Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to devices for securing a washboard to a tub, and the object is to provide a simple yet, strong and comparatively inexpensive device for this purpose.
The holder comprises a longitudinally-adjustable body portion whereby it may be adjusted to any width of washboard, clamping devices movable on the body portion to ad just the device to tubs of different diameters, and means whereby the washboard may be swung into and out of a tub without detaching the same from the holder.
I will describe a holder embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a washboard as attached to a tub by a holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the holder. Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof, and Fig. 4c shows one of the clamping devices, partly in section. 1
The holder comprises a body portion consisting of two longitudinally-slotted arms A A,adapted to slide, one relatively to the other, for the purpose of adjusting the length of the holder with relation to the width of a washboard. A lug a on the end of the arm A extends into the slot in the arm A, and a lug a on the end of the arm A extends into the slot in the arm A. These lugs serve to keep the arms in alignment, and a clamping-screw a is provided to secure the arms as adjusted.
B B indicate clamping-standards respectively attached to the arms A A, by means of pivotal connections 1), whereby the clampingstandards may be swung in a horizontal plane to adjust them to the radius of a tub. The clamping-standards extend at right angles to the length of the arms A A, and the lower portion of each clamping-standard is bifurcated or provided with two jaws b b to engage respectively the inner and outer surfaces Serial No. 564,860. (No model.)
of a tub. Within the jaw b is pivoted a clamping-cam B the inner surface of which projects beyond the inner surface of the jaw so as to engage against the inner surface of a tub.
A clamping-screw B extends through a tapped hole in the upper portion of the clamping-standard B, and a block b is mounted to rotate on the end of the screw B and a similar block b is mounted to rotate on the upper portion of-the clamping-standard B. These blocks b b are designed to engage the outer surface of the washboard side rails, as indicated in Fig. 1, and as the blocks are mounted to rotate -thehoard may be swung out of the tub when it is so desired.
From the foregoing, in connection with Fig. 1, the manner of using the device is quite evident, and therefore need not be further described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A washboard-holder, comprising arms adjustable longitudinally, one with relation to the other, and clamping devices on the outer ends of the same, adapted to engage with a tub and with a washboard, substantially as specified.
2. A washboard-holder, comprising longitudinally-adjustable arms, and clamping devices mounted to swing on the arms, and adapted to engage both a tub and a washboard, substantially as specified.
3. A washboard-holder, comprising longitudinally-slotted arms, a clamping-screw therefor, standards mounted to swing on the arms, and having a bifurcate lower portion, the pivoted cams in said lower portion, and means on the upper portion of the standards for engaging a washboard, substantially as specified.
4. Awashboard-holder, comprising adjustable arms, the swinging standards on said arms adapted to engage with a tub, a clamping-screw supported by one of the standards, a rotary block on said screw, and a rotary block on the other of said standards, substantially as specified.
JAMES A. W. SEARS.
