Filed Sept. 30, 1958, Ser. No. 764,393 1 Claim. (Cl. 248-41) This invention relates to a support for a beach umbrella, and has as its primary object the provision of a readily adjustable support, by means of which a beach umbrella may be secured to the edge of a table or the like.

An additional object of the invention is the provision of such a device which may be secured to such a support as a table top at any desired height, and which clampingly engages both the top and the bottom of the table top.

A further object of the invention is the provision of such a support or brace, having means whereby the pole of the beach umbrella may be readily supported at a desired height.

Still another object of the invention is the provision of such a device whereby the angle of inclination of the beach umbrella pole may be readily varied in accord ance with the desires of the user.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and assemble.

Still other objects resides in the combinations of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawings wherein there is shown a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.

FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of the support or brace of the instant invention, shown as supporting a beach umbrella in association with a table top.

FIGURE 2 is an enlarged side elevational view, partially in section, of the construction of FIGURE 1.

FIGURE 3 is a top plan view of the support as shown in FIGURE 2, parts thereof being shown in section, and the umbrella pole being shown in section.

FIGURE 4 is a front elevational view of the construction of FIGURES 2 and 3, certain concealed parts thereof being indicated in dotted lines.

FIGURE 5 is a cross sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIGURE 4.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

Having reference now to the drawings in detail, the support of the instant invention is generally indicated at 10, and is disclosed, in FIGURE 1 as engaging the pole or staff 11 of a beach umbrella 12, to clampingly engage the same with a table top 13, supported by legs 14.

Referring to the clamp in detail, it will be seen that the same is comprised of a front plate 15, having an upper bracket member 16 and a lower bracket member 17. The upper bracket member is provided with a pair of spaced apart threaded apertures 18, through each of which extends a clamping screw 19. Each clamping screw 19 is provided with a head 20, and an enlarged lower extremity 21, which may be suitably swivelly mounted on the end thereof. The lower bracket 17 is provided correspondingly with a pair of spaced apart threaded openings 22, through which clamping screws 23 extend, the clamping screws 23 corresponding to the clamping screws 19, and including heads 24 fixed thereto and clamping elements 25 similar to the clamping elements 21. 19 and 23 respectively to insure a relatively tight clamping engagement of the device with the table top.

Extending forwardly and outwardly from the plate 15, is a front horizontal bracket member 30. The member 30 is provided, as best shown in FIGURE 3, with an elongated central opening 31. The end portions 32 are provided with threaded apertures 33, in opposite ends thereof, through each of which threaded apertures extends a clamping screw 34, the clamping screws 34 being identical on opposite sides, and each being provided with a knurled head 36, which is suitably fixed thereto as by means of a pin 37. The inner extremity of each screw 34 is provided with an arcuate clamping plate 38, adapted to encircle the staif or pole 11 of the umbrella, the plates 38 being mounted for relative vertical pivotal movement on the ends of the clamping screws 34 as by means of pivot pins 39, which extend through suitable ears 40 extending rearwardly from the convex surface of the arcuate plates 38.

A depending portion of plate 15 is provided with a central aperture 46, through which rotatably extends a stud 47 which is secured to a ring 48', which is adapted slidably to engage about the staff or pole 11. The stud 47 is provided with an enlarged head 49, whereby relative rotation of the same may be readily effected, as the angle of inclination of the staff 11 is adjusted in accordance with the positioning of the clamping screws 34.

From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved beach umbrella brace or support, which will serve tightly to clamp the pole or staff of the umbrella to a suitable horizontal support such as a table top, and by means of which the angle of inclination of the pole or staff may be readily varied within predetermined limits. The device may also be used in inverted position, and similarly may be used to secure a stafi or pole to a vertical rather than a horizontal surface.

It will also be seen that there is herein provided a device which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.

As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment herein before shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What is claimed is:

A support for clamping an umbrella on the edge of tables of various heights, comprised of front vertical plate, upper and lower spaced bracket members extending rearwardly therefrom, said bracket members having vertically aligned threaded openings, vertical clamping screws adjustably held within said threaded openings adapted to clamp the edge of a table, a wide plate providing a horizontal bracket member having an elongated opening, extending forwardly from said front vertical plate, horizontal clamping screws extending through the end walls of said elongated opening adapted to adjustably clamp an umbrella pole, and an adjustable ring pivotally secured to said front vertical plate adjacent to the lower end thereof adapted to receive said umbrella pole and secure said pole against accidental displacement.
