UNITED 1 STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HrVIOKARS, OF MONTROSE, MISSOURI.
CLOTHES-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,103, dated August 2, I881,
Application filed December 14,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. VIoKnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montrose, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures. of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification;
My invention relates to that class of devices which are made use of for holding garments against the lines upon which they are suspended when being dried; and the nature thereof consists in certain novel combinations of parts hereinafter described.
In the accompanying plate of drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same letters, Figure I represents a wire suspended between posts, and having thereon sliding double-ended clamps. Fig. 2 represents, to an enlarged scale, the double-ended clamp detached from the wire.
The sleeve A, which is so constructed .of proper metal that it will not rust, and so made that it will slide upon the wire B, is provided at each end with a clamp, G, to which the garments to be dried are attached. The upper jaw, a, of the said clampis pivoted to the lower jaw, and provided with a spring, I), and fingerpiece (I, by which it is actuated. The lower jaw, a, is rigidly attached to the said sleeve, andhas annpwardly-projecting flange, between which and the serrated surface of the upper jaw the garments are firmly held by the form of the spring I).
The wire and all parts of the clamping device should be constructed of some material which is not liable to rust.
I am aware of the existence of a clothes-pin consisting of two jaws united after the manner of two levers,'and to a yoke arranged between the levers or jaws to permit it to he slipped upon the clothes-line.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- The clothes-pin consisting of the sleeve or tube IA, with each end extended at one side thereQf-andin a parallel plane with the longitudinal axis of the tube, and provided with the jaw a. and the levers d, pivoted to the tube-extensions, and havingj aws a with springs b'intcrposed between the said extensions and levers, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. VIOKARS.
